Mid-Century Outsider Art Girl in Yellow Oil on 10x12 Linoleum D. Hayden
A haunting and memorable example of mid-century outsider art, this small but commanding oil painting is signed D. Hayden and executed unusually on linoleum, a surface occasionally used by self-taught artists of the 1940s-60s. The piece features a wide-eyed girl in a mustard-yellow dress standing in a stark urban alleyway, her pose confident but her gaze unsettling. A black cat lurks at the edge of the scene, adding a surreal, almost narrative tension. The bold stylization, simplified anatomy, and eerie atmosphere give the work a distinct Big-Eyes / Pop-Folk sensibility that collectors love. Presented in its original mid-century gold frame, ready to display. Hayden (signed lower left) Era: Mid-century Medium: Oil on linoleum Size: 10″ x 12″ (artwork), approx. 14″ x 16″ in frame Style: Outsider Art / Big-Eyes / Urban Pop-Folk Frame: Vintage gold frame in good condition Condition: Excellent for age; light surface wear consistent with vintage pieces.

The product is an original acrylic painting by artist Purvis Young, titled Procession. ” Measuring 29″ in length and 17 in height, this medium-sized artwork is signed by the artist and features a military-themed subject. Produced in 1980 in the United States, this unique piece of outsider art is one of a kind and handmade, making it a valuable addition to any art collection. Visual meaning: In his paintings, you often see long lines of figures – sometimes on horseback, sometimes on foot – moving through the city or across abstract backgrounds. These are the processions. Symbolic meaning: For Young, processions represented the movement of people through struggle and hope – a reflection of life, migration, protest, and spiritual journey. Cultural roots: He was inspired by what he saw in his Overtown neighborhood of Miami – parades, funerals, protests, and the flow of daily life in a vibrant but struggling Black community. Spiritual layer: Processions in his work often have a biblical or transcendent feeling, echoing pilgrimage or deliverance – people moving toward freedom or a better future.
