RARE ORIGINAL PAINTED FOLK ART OVAL BRIDES BOX 18th C Pocahontas John Rolfe
What I think this is , is a Pennsylvania Dutch folk art primitive painted cedar brides box circa 18 th C But I really dont know. The painting is primitive. Bought at an estate sale in upstate NY. She looks like shes wearing a headdress but I dont think that type of headdress was worn by Eastern tribes? Would be really valuable if that were related to John Rolfe and Pocahontas on the lid. They have over 100,000 living descendants today, so could be. There is some old newspapers stuck to the bottom I didnt take it off in case it was a clue to origin. Please see all pics close up as this is not my area of expertise. 9 1/4″ X 15″ APPROXIMATELY. AAFA ANTIQUE HAND PAINTED BLUE BUREAU DESK RARE OOAK DOVETAILED SQUARE NAILS. Up for sale is this amazing and beautiful old desk or bureau. It’s an old flip top desk and it’s got a one-of-kind, hand painted motif. The main desk is a nice dark blue color with light blue areas as well as wood undertones peeking through here and there. There’s also oyster white, reddish orange, and dark blue accents on the motifs and trim. It’s all hand painted and quite amazing! The desk has a stretcher base with turned legs and bun feet. Inside it’s definitely from the pen and quill era as you can see ink spills on the inside. There are two compartments on either side of the single drawer which is a nicely dovetailed drawer as you can see in the pictures. On the drawer, in pencil, it’s written 1778. On the front of the desk there is a dark metal escutcheon and a skeleton key hole but we don’t have the key and we don’t know if the lock works. Inside the lid there are black strap iron hinges. They are really cool looking. They do have some newer, but rusty screws in the right hinge as you can see in the pictures but you can see where there is a nail in the left hinge that comes up and through the top of the desk and is bent over. We don’t know the age of this desk, but it looks like 1700’s American to us based on the hardware, the style and the bun feet. We’re not experts and we don’t know so you make the call. There are big square nails in the desk and we took some close up pictures of them. There are some condition issues here and there, but for it’s age, it’s in amazing shape. There are some worm holes in the back, especially along the joint in the wood. The bun feet and stretcher base have some issues including beetle damage, cracks and deterioration. There trim is cracked as you can see in the pictures. Has nicks, dings, scrapes, cuts, cracks, stains, chips, chunks, edge-wear and an absolutely wonderful patina. It’s truly an amazing piece! The desk measures 38.25″ H to the back and 32″ H to the front edge x 36.25″ W x 23″ D. This is a great desk and would make an amazing conversation piece. It’s sure to be a conversation starter! We can also recommend a couple of shippers. We regularly put up new items so check out our other items. We will do our best to answer your questions. We will do the same. We couldn’t sell anything if it wasn’t for you and the time you have taken to spend looking at our items. As a very small business we strive to keep you as our customer! We GUARANTEE that your item(s) will be received as described. We work hard to describe them correctly and in detail (note that the pictures are part of the description) with all flaws (if any) exposed. RARE Antique Primitive Early American Folk Tramp Art Heart Wood Picture Frame
Very unusual and rare piece of Early American history! This tramp art frame is a great piece of folk art, with wooden hearts on each corner and splayed wooden pieces coming out from each side of the frame, each one hand carved. It is pretty deep, so it could have originally been used as a shadow box for a mourning wreath or something else. Hangs horizontally, but could be changed to hang vertically. Measurements: 17″ tall x 20″ wide x 2 deep. Inside of frame: 9.5″ x 6.5″. Condition: In as found condition. Will need a back, wire, and glass for framing. Also, missing half of one of the hearts. One of the pieces on the sides moves and it may be missing a decorative piece on the side, hard to tell. For its age, it is actually in pretty decent shape. The item “RARE Antique Primitive Early American Folk Tramp Art Heart Wood Picture Frame” is in sale since Tuesday, July 23, 2019. This item is in the category “Art\Folk Art & Indigenous Art”. Rare ANTIQUE 19th C NORWAY Wood LG PAINTED ALE BOWL Scandinavian Folk Art #1. May be in the Hallingdal style of painting- not sure though— The colorfully painted wonderfully painted bowl is in good condition throughout, with expected paint loss and wear and/or fading as expected. There is no label nor age details but it is believed and appears to be an older one. It is probably from Wisconsin or Minnesota. We have dealt in Dala horses, roosters and some Swedish bowls – we recently found antique 2 bowls at an antique show and had found1 dated and signed1958 a few years ago. 2 are believed to be from the late 19th C or early 1900s and from Norway. It has Norge painted on each side of the rim top. This one is typically referred to as an Ale Bowl and it is artfully painted and carved with a decoratively carved rim. It is a beautifully painted example with nice age and patina and a nice size one which is perfect for display or as a statement piece. This will make a great example for your Scandinavian or Folk Art collection. We are also listing the other 2 today as well. This one measures approx 14.25″ to outer edge of bowl on the long side and 11.5″ on the shorter side. It is approx 4″ tall and the base measures approx 4.75″ at the base. The paint has all beautifully mellowed and is a very colorful and artistically painted item. The decorated top of the bowl has paint wear as to be expected and it is nicely decorated with floral and classic rosemaling designs. Please see our other auctions for similar items. RARE Iconic Mary Whitfield African American Negro Folk Art Painting South Cotton
Whitfield an American Classic. A very rare African American Folk Art-Outsider Art Masterpiece by the elusive painter in her signature iconic style medium, acrylic/watercolor on canvas board. Appropriately titled,’Day is Done’, the painting is accompanied with a fascinating narrative describing the painting subject and hand written and signed by the artist herself. Although’Day is Done’ has been highly sought after for decades by museums and collectors, the painting is being offered here for sale for the very first time. Mary Whitfield has signed’Day Is Done’ twice, on the front of the painting with her distinctive, MW, and with her full signature found on the reverse of the canvas. Dimensions 16″ x 20″. Mary Whitfield was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1947 when her mother was nineteen. Her father walked out on their wedding day so Mary spent the first years of her life in the home of her maternal grandparents. It was a loving environment with two aunts who each had eight children. The home was filled with family stories and traditions. Marys grandmother was an active soldier in the Civil Rights struggle. As a child, Mary developed a vivid imagination and loved to spend hours entertaining her younger sister and cousins, by telling stories that she illustrated with drawings. When Mary was seven, her mother remarried a man from New York and moved there with her sister. She and her sister would spend every summer in Alabama. In Great Neck, Mary and her sister were pioneers in integration, being the only black members of the student body. During the early years of her marriage, Mary began having the compulsion to create things after her children were put to bed. She would often find old plywood and housepaint in her garage and would paint paintings. This compulsion became a continuation of her love for storytelling that filled her lonely nights. Bringing to visual life a variety of stories became her escape from the sadness in her marriage. Over time, she found that creating art was a way of coping with her depression. Whitfield focuses her rich paintings on the historical and modern plight of African-Americans. The powerful works contain little detail; the figures have no facial features. Instead, the drama of their gestures or body language conveys the feeling of the painting. The American Museum of Folk Art wrote that through her spiritually powerful images and writings Mary Frances Whitfield re-interprets and documents stories told to her as a child. Her deceptively simple yet touching portrayals of the disquieting and heroic history of African Americans convey injustice, suffering, love and optimism. Day Is Done’ is a masterpiece, a virtual tour de force. The paintings of Mary F. Whitfield are found in the renown museums and in private collections. The item “RARE Iconic Mary Whitfield African American Negro Folk Art Painting South Cotton” is in sale since Thursday, November 8, 2018. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”.
