A compelling matched pair of mid-19th-century portraits dated 1853, depicting a husband and wife in period attire. These works represent classic 19th-century folk (vernacular) portraiture, created for domestic display rather than academic exhibition, with a quiet, dignified presence that collectors and designers value. Both portraits are executed in oil on canvas. The canvas has been laid down on a rigid support, likely as a historical stabilization measure rather than as a modern mounting. This practice was common in the 19th and early 20th centuries to protect aging canvas and allow for permanent framing. The works are not stretched on traditional stretchers, and the canvas support remains clearly visible at areas of wear. The portraits are housed in their original gilt wood frames, which were professionally cleaned and stabilized in the mid-20th century. An original label from Clyde L. Smith, Designer of Fine Frames, Minneapolis, Minnesota, remains affixed to the reverse, with handwritten notes indicating cleaning and restoration in April 1951. A handwritten label on the verso reads T. This is presented as a period or later attribution; no further documentation has been found. The works are offered as antique portraits and not as authenticated works by a documented academic artist. Both portraits are in very good antique condition consistent with age. Age-appropriate surface wear, light craquelure, and patina are present. The male portrait shows minor surface undulation consistent with natural aging and historic mounting, visible primarily at an angle. No active flaking or instability is observed. Frames show expected wear and minor losses. Please review all photos carefully as they are part of the description. They are each approximately 12 by 14 inches framed size. Professionally packed and fully insured.
