Tending sheep, he was unable to attend school and could neither read nor write[2]. In 1948, he left Tunisia[2]. After working as a baker, he became a boxer before improvising as an actor and singer[3]. In 1978 and 1980, he exhibited at the Salon d’hiver[4]. In the 1980s, he moved to Paris[4]. Discovered by Jean Dubuffet[4], his work as a painter and sculptor is akin to art brut and singular[5]. He is represented in art brut museums and private collections[5], including the Lille Métropole Musée d’Art moderne, d’Art contemporain et d’Art brut[6]. Jaber Al Mahjoub died on October 21, 2021 in Paris, and is buried in his hometown[4].
