4 Victorian Children in Rural Landscape. Folk art oil on canvas painting. Naive or primitive style. This is a lovely folk art (naive, primitive, outsider) oil on canvas portrait of four children of various ages, including three girls and one boy, in a natural landscape setting. The sumptuous Victorian costume suggests that it was likely commissioned by a wealthy family during the latter half of the 19th century. The canvas-maker’s stamp on the reverse side, “WINSOR & NEWTON, 38, RATHBONE PLACE, LONDON, ” indicates that the work is likely English in origin. The painting is by an unknown (likely itinerant) artist; unsigned; framed in a gold gesso frame. The face of the painting is in good condition. Partial relining along bottom (full edge) and top edge (4″-5″ section only) of canvas. 5 small scratches, scuffs (edges – where canvas meets stretcher); 1 dent approx. 1/16; 2 patch repairs (not visible, except from back). Frame is in good condition (for its age). STRETCHER SIZE: 27.5 inches x 33 inches (69.85 cm x 83.82 cm). FRAME SIZE: 34.75 inches x 39.5 inches x 3 inches (88.265 cm x 100.33 cm x 7.62 cm).
