ANTIQUE VINTAGE FOLK ART HAND CARVED PAINTED ENGLISH SETTER HUNTING DOG With QUAIL
Carved and polychrome painted wood hunting dog measuring 8 1/2 inches long. Stands just over 6″ tall and 3″ at widest with quail, base widest 2 1/4. I believe this is an English Setter hunting dog, carrying a male mallard duck for his master. Wonderfully painted with dark brown spots all over body, face and tail. Dog holds upside down quail which has a green neck, with yellow neck base border, red accent around quail eyes. Quails body equally matches dogs with spots throughout, bringing this piece together. Quail also features textured wing (there is only 1–dogs mouth covers where second wing would’ve been–wonderful artist choice). Dog stands in traditional show stance for his owner, with back legs extended–head facing forward and tail straight out. Dogs face is very well done and looks folk art but also has realistic features and white around pupils. All of dogs paws are outlines in black paint to show where each toe would be, rather than leaving it nondescript. Figure has had some repairs, as is common with an item of antique/vintage age, one front paw and alternating back paw/leg were damaged at some point this items lifetime, but have been repaired and are now very sturdy. Dog stands on wooden platform for display that has areas of paint chipping and scratches. Additionally, this dog has been poly’d and some there is crackling throughout. This just helps signify that it is a vintage item. Most of these defects would not be noticed when you display your item. Overall, the item is in good estate found condition, and would make a lovely addition to anyone’s folk art or carving collection. Dog lovers and duck/quail hunters this item is for you. They are antique/vintage estate found and all items, and as such all will run the risk of having the following defects which are, but not limited to: age spots dark or light, scratches, paint loss, fading, signs of age, signs of use, signs of general wear and tear, signs of storage. FOLK ART PAINTING BY outsider artist RA MILLER. This piece is on MASONITE. He made art to beautify his yard by cutting out tin pieces and and often combining pieces to form elaborate whirlygigs and functional windscreens and ornamental objects. He began to fashion his brightly painted tin constructions which he attached to stakes in his yard, larger wood assemblages. RA Miller, a southern folk artist, was the youngest of eight children. At 12 years of age he worked in the cotton mill, for 20 years. After his marriage he started preaching over northeast Georgia. After retiring he began to create his own art and whirligigs. He often did patriotic themed art. He used old tin, recycled wood, bicycle parts and scrap metal for materials. He is known for the painted cutouts and drawings. His artwork has appeared in various books and exhibits on Folk Art and in the Band, R. M’s videos His paintings and cut-outs have been shown at the High Museum of Art exhibition Outside the Mainstream: Folk Art in our Time. RA Miller died in 2006.
