Mid-19th c hand carved & hand painted antique Indian string wooden instruments. 22 ¼” Length x 6 ½” Width x 4 Depth. Mid-19th century Indian Sarangi 17 string antique Banjira instrument, with the bow now missing. One upper wooden knob to the right side was broken off. But all strings are complete and still intact. Some scuffs and some minor paint loss. Very Good to Excellent overall antique condition. Apart from the original bow now being separated from the main instrument and now unavailable, the instrument itself is in exceptionally well-preserved overall antique condition. It’s an extraordinary piece and has exquisite wood hand carving, as well as over-the-top, incredibly accomplished, detailed and well-realized, hand painted figuration on the front lower and upper body, as well as covering the curved lower body of the back of the instrument. An incredible early instrument with absolutely outstanding original, hand painted surfaces. It remains as it was found and in 100% original antique condition. Incredibly, all strings are still present and the wooden case doesn’t suffer from any drying, warping, noticeable dents, dings, water damage, unsightly stains, flea-bites to any of its edges, fractures, repairs or loss. The painted Indian figures, in traditional, period dress, ordain the front, as well as back of the piece. The painted surfaces are crazed and crackled with age. The wood knobs are dry. About as beautiful an object as any mere mortal could possibly ask for. A veritable gift from the gods.
