While he has housed his Color of Life Gallery in several antique stores along East Washington Street, he is known for painting and displaying his treasures on the sidewalk in full view of passersby. According to fellow Navasota artist and sculptor Russell Cushman, Collins is the most successful artist in the Brazos Valley, and perhaps the most prolific artist that Texas has produced. Leon Collins is best known for portraying his many childhood memories, but his work includes a number of distinct phases and styles. Collins is an amazingly productive artist, painting one or more works a day. He sells them as fast as he can paint them, so original works of his are rare and hard to find.
