Antique Folk Art O/B Painting Hudson River School c. 1890
This is an incredibly nice antique c. 1890 Folk Art Hudson River School oil on artist blackboard painting done by an unknown but talented artist – the painting depicts a river tributary or cove of a larger river on which three people are in a rowboat traversing along a wide section of the tributary or cove – it appears that they are rowing towards the end of the cove where perhaps there is a cottage in which they live or where they will visit – interestingly, the man in the middle of the rowboat is wearing a dark suit & a dark top hat similar to what Abe Lincoln wore – sitting next to him is either a woman or an older girl; & rowing the boat is another younger man – there appears to be a picnic basket in the bow of the boat. Just beyond the rowboat are three very large boulders jutting out of the water suggesting that the tributary / cove is not very deep – beyond the boulders & in the middle of the painting is a very impressive granite stone double-arch bridge (possibly, a triple-arch bridge where the 3rd arch can not be seen in this picture) which was constructed with large granite blocks that use gravity to keep the arches strong & intact – probably constructed in the early 1800’s, this bridge is a marvel of physics & construction knowledge of the time to be so strong & enduring in the 1890’s – it appears to be large enough to be a horse & wagon size bridge. Beyond the stone bridge, the artist has painted a range of mountains where the artist colored them a muted purple-gray set against a robin’s egg blue sky in order to give the mountains a sense of distance from the stone bridge – the large trees filled with green colored foliage located on the left & right of the foreground also is an artistic technique for showing distance as well as scale & size of the other elements in the painting. The painting itself is in very good antique condition & has been recently professionally cleaned to get rid of the old dirt & smoke residue that was on the original overly-darkened varnish – thereafter, the painting was re-varnished – it measures 12″ x 18″ sight size – the painting is greatly enhanced by its original ornate gesso on wood frame that has been repainted at some point in the past – the frame is in very good antique condition & measures 17″ x 24″.
