1800s FOLK ART ORIGINAL PAINT MUSTARD EARLY WOOD DRY SINK DOUGH BOX SQUARE NAILS. Up for sale is this wonderful old primitive portable dry sink. Imagine this on the back of a chuck wagon as settlers moved across the country!! Stop for lunch and break out the portable dry sink! It’s a nice size. It’s a wonderful dry, crackled, soft mustard color with blue, red, grey, cream and wood undertones. Please see photos for the best description and accuracy. The dry sink has a lid on it that is removable. It is not attached to the dry sink. There are also two holes and a crack in the lid of the dry sink as you can see in the pictures. You could use this as a center piece on your table and it would give you a great look. Leave the lid off and fill it up with wonderful greens or pumpkins or Christmas items. The paint appears to be all original and is dry, worn, rubbed, scraped, chipped, nicked, edge worn and patina-ed! There are also some cracks in the wood from age. There’s some damage on the right side where the wood was damaged. Also at that point, you can see one of the large heavy duty square nails. There are a lot of square nails in this piece. This is everything you’d expect to see from an old survivor cabinet like this! What a great look!! It’s an old dry sink and you can see that there’s even two drains / holes on the left side in the bottom. We took a close up picture of this. There are a lot of old rusty nails as you can see in the pictures. The paint has some edge wear, scrapes, patina, fading, variation of color, wood showing through, chipping and nicks. Please see photos for accurate detail and description. The pictures are pretty good for the color, especially the close up ones. It’s a great dry sink! The dry sink measures 32.5″ L x 22″ D x 6.5″ H without the top and 7.5″ H with the top. The top is 7/8 thick wood. We regularly put up new items so check out our other items. Gorgeous Original Antique Ratable… With the hand-made nails in its neat shabby frame – it still retains overall rich colors and vibrancy. The holy spirit is visiting the young Mary in the form the white dove. Mary is holding three lilies representing a virgin’s purity. She is wearing a crown of roses, which precludes Jesus’s crown of thorns, and the pain that she has yet to experience. The blossoming roses represent the joy she experiences at the birth of Jesus. She has not yet experienced the suffering of his crucifixion and death. The artwork is fine. Again, the frame is gorgeous, old and rich with character. The frame has two missing panels… Overall, frame measurements are roughly 19″ wide by 21″ high. The tin ratablo measures roughly 9-1/2″ x 12″ high. Beautiful and interesting hand-carved cat. My aunt had it for many, many years. It measures 14″ long, 7 ” tall, and 3 3/4 deep. In picture # 5 you can see clearly that there is a chip off the paint and then a crack. The crack that you see is a crack in the paint, but not a break in the cat itself. The cat has not been broken or glued. The paint is merely cracked from old age. It is a very beautiful and graceful shape. The colors are lovely and the eyes are mesmerizing. This vibrant 24 x 36 oil on canvas captures daily life in a small Haitian village employing flattened forms and picture spave and using lots of dots, dashes and other textural ditties to lend the work lightness and vitality. It is signed lower left G. Auguste and is in very good, clean stable condition. Georges Auguste Haitian, b. 1933 is known for his vibrant, colorful scenes of rural Haitian life in a style known locally as Raw Art. Born in Vialet, Petit-Goave, Haiti, Auguste received only three years of schooling in his native village before losing his mother died in a fire at their home. He was placed in an orphanage where he learned textile weaving. During a trip to Port-au-Prince as an adult, Georges secured a position as night watchman at the Center dArt and began to paint using materials discarded by the artists at the Center. For ten years he studied with the painter Nehemy Jean, and now paints scenes of Haitian life, the way he “sees it in dream”. The rich and intricate patterns of George Auguste’s painting belie his background as a tapestry maker as he visually and figuratively weaves elements of daily life into colorful compositions that become spiritual narratives frequently employing a birds eye perspective. We offer for sale a really wonderful piece of Victorian folk art, a painting of a dog standing on a chair looking out the window in great anticipation. We’ve taken the liberty of calling it “Waiting for Her Mistress” as it so aptly describes the scene. This oil on board came from Portland, Maine, circa 1880s (see below). PAINTING SUBJECT & SCENE. We are not art experts or historians but will share our conclusions about this unsigned piece of domestic genre art. The subject is charming, colorful, expressive, and well detailed in a feminine style so likely the artist was a lady of means, a gifted amateur. Women were more likely than men not to sign their works. The curtains are lace, the walls papered with a leaf pattern, the carpeting covered with repeating flowers, the green velvet ottoman fully braided, all carefully detailed. The Victorian parlor chair features small wheels in front and an ornate crest rail with ears. On the windowsill sits a slim vase holding flowers. The dog is likely a Toy Manchester Terrier, a popular breed at the time when ears and tail were not to be cropped. Bright light better shows the dog’s tan snout. The dog is female and has a cute collar with a big red bow. THE PAINTING AND FRAME. Oil on board, with a period label on the back. Of Portand, Maine, was a popular drugstore that expanded into other provisions including artists’ supplies. The original frame is of intricately detailed plaster with shiny gold paint. It shows its age with normal cracks and occasional small pieces lacking. 23″ wide by 24-3/4″ high by 2-1/4 deep. 16-1/2″ wide by 18-1/4″ high. Weighs nearly 8 pounds unpacked. A painting that’s 130 years old will have some issues, but overall this one is in very good condition with no serious damage. There is some normal crackling and a few missing tiny flakes, and a very small section of one chair leg looks like it might have been retouched in the past. There is wear around the edges where the board touches the frame. A new frame would cover that up. The board is no longer totally flat but it’s not obvious or detracting and won’t affect reframing. It could use cleaning to brighten up the colors that have normal darkening with age. This painting has so much appeal. It tells a story — use your imagination! Please see photos for details. Scandinavian small folk art painted dome topped chest / trunk dated 1880’s A wonderful small Norwegian kiste, or dome top blanket chest with a nicely decorated decoration on the front and dome topped with a beautiful comb paint surrounding the rest of the chest. Rosemaling (rose painting) designs and lettering. A lock is present as is the key which is a giant plus. The outer edge of this box has text painted in black. The early script is defining this as Norwegian…. If I’m incorrect please let me know. The piece is painted in the traditional manner of decorated items familiar to this era and regions. It has a natural interior with wonderful heavy ironwork hinges. Ironwork and peg construction can be seen in close-up photo. The dome top is decorated with a strong design consisting. The chest is 15 by 10 by 9.5 The overall condition of the piece is quite good and again, so very attractive. It is structurally very solid and well built. The top is still tightly attached and the hinges are holding strong. One decorative interior iron looks as the tip is broken off. The painted surface is in excellent condition although the piece has an early, old re-paint over the original by the owners descendants, and shows a light coat of shellacking and as a result protected the surface through the many years. My flash doesn’t due the piece justice. This box is as nice as they get. Very hard to find and you will wait a long time before you find another this appealing and with a working lock and key. Perfect size for almost any space. Perfect for the Scandinavian decor or as a gift. Thanks for looking and as always, visit often! The item “19th c.
