Painted with oil house paint on used plywood panel, a purple animal on blue background, with a purple scalloped edge. Animal has red eye and black toenails. It is labeled in pencil on the reverse Flying Dinosaur (or Dragon) RayKass Coll. It is signed MoseT on the lower left front in black paint (the S is reversed) and includes a hanger made from the metal ring of a soda or beer can pull top, typical of Tollivers work. Mose Tolliver (1919 2006) is a major self-taught American figurative folk artist whose paintings have garnered international recognition for Outsider Art. He is known for his unique visionary paintings of colorful animals and people. After he was featured in the Corcoran Galleries 1982 show, Black Folk Art in America, his work has been exhibited and collected widely and is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art and other museums. Condition: good, typical of Tollivers work on found wood. Front has vertical cracks and knots in top layer of plywood. Reverse is paint-stained, with one layer of plywood cracked horizontally.
