Original Black Americana Folk Art Naive Painting. Woman Dreaming On Picket Fence
For sale is an outstanding early 20th century black Americana naïve folk art style oil painting. From a Maryland Private estate. One “gets” this painting almost immediately when viewing it. The woman stands against the country picket fence looking up towards the sky while wearing her Sunday best black and white checkered dress. Her mind wondering off, dreaming of a better life. Perhaps she is thinking about being an actress or a singer in a hopping jazz club somewhere in New York or Chicago. Or a dancer touring the world with a dance troupe visiting Paris and the other major European cities that she only reads about in books and newspapers. She may just be dreaming of a little simpler life not consumed with the daily rugged chores of living on a rural farm which consists of work from sun up until sundown. You can tell that while content with her simple life on a southern farm she hopes and dreams for so much more for herself. In her eyes you can see this dream may never come to be. But she dreams the dream. On the porch either a husband or one of her children leisurely strums a tune on the banjo. Two ducks seem to enjoy her company by the picket fence in the foreground. This painting is signed in the lower right corner. Like many Black Americana paintings the artist cannot be found in our research. This painting is oil on hard stock paper board. It appears to be dated on the reverse either 4/3/11, or 4/23/41. We cannot tell accurately. Please see the close-up detail picture for consideration. Condition: The painting being in overall good condition for age. Some yellowing of the surface varnish but over all good for age. Some small areas of paint surface lost on the outer edges near the frame contact area. The frame having age-appropriate wear with numerous layers of built-up varnish coatings. Framed – 18 1/2″ x 14 1/2″. Painting – 15 7/8″ x 11 7/8″. The item “Original Black Americana Folk Art Naive Painting. Woman Dreaming On Picket Fence” is in sale since Friday, June 09, 2017. Original painting by Gerard Fortune. Painting of 3 Haitian Females in dresses with painted faces. Authentic Vintage Condition, painting is intact. Looks like acrylic but may be oil on CANVAS. Painting size WITH FRAME ON 38×47.5. (Actual canvas size is approximately 30 1/8 X 39 7/8). Haitian Artist GERARD FORTUNE. Acrylic or Oil painting on CANVAS by known Haitian prolific artist Gerard Fortune. This piece has been in Mr. Lawerence’s primitive art collection for years. Lawrence Roseman owner of painting, said it was common for Gerard to paint friends, associates and workers daily for his subjects. Left lower front, signature by artist GERARD. From the collection of retired gallerist and rug/textile dealer, Lawrence Roseman who worked directly with Gerard Fortune in Port-au-Prince during 1980’s. Gerard worked as a private cook in a home, and restaurant. By 1981 he was no longer working as a cook. He worked directly with Gallery Issa, a Palestinian gallerist who supplied Gerard with a studio to paint in. Gerard was prolific averaging 2 paintings a day. Gerards exact age is unknown, but Roseman believes he was born 1925, although some believe 1934-5. Roseman said Gerard was turning out his naive folk art in late 70’s and eventually formed an association with Gallery Issa by 1981. Gerard would come to Issas gallery with a stack of masonite boards and paint on the ground floor garage on his knees. He’d keep a copy of his signature so he could duplicate it because he didn’t know how to read or write. Works are in museum collections.
