Early Antique Folk Art Hand Painted Wedding Trunk Blanket Chest Dovetailed Dated
EARLY ANTIQUE FOLK ART HAND PAINTED WOOD WEDDING TRUNK BLANKET CHEST DOVETAILED DATED 1868! Up for sale is this amazing hand painted trunk, blanket chest or mule chest. It’s a beautiful large chest with tons of character and that true folk art flavor. Many trunks that were highly decorated like this were wedding trunks but who can know? It has a hinged lid as you can see in the pictures. The trunk has an wonderful, dark brown black base color with reddish-orange, and faded yellow (tannish) highlighted accents in the folk art / floral painting. It looks like the flowers are tulips to us and there are reddish accents here and there. The paint appears to be all original and has nicks, chips and scrapes on it as you’d expect from and item of this age. You can also see the painted date on the front of 1868!! The top of the trunk is just plain with the exception of one very faint flower in the center. The lid has a lot of patina, scuffs and wear from things being on it and years of use. The front board of the top is likely newer and was replaced as the side boards of the top are fatter than the front board of the top. Under the trunk the legs are square and hold the trunk up off the ground. The legs have big wooden pegs that go through the bottom of the trunk and come up on the inside. They are about 1 in diameter. The legs are nicked, dinged and worn as you’d expect. There are also a number of old worm holes in the legs. There are not that many worm holes in the bottom board of the trunk which we thought was nicely surprising! Please look closely at the pictures and you can see all of this. On the front there’s an black iron escutcheon for the lock. You can see the lock on the pictures of the inside. We do not have the key and don’t know if the lock works. We do know that there’s nothing for the lock to grab hold of on the lid so having a key may not help things if you are trying to lock things up. There probably was an iron peg / shank that would come down and fit in the lock but it’s gone. Under the lid on the left side there’s a mouse hole where a little critter gnawed a hole to get in! Inside there is a little till on the left side. This was often used for small valuables and items so they did not get lost in the big trunk. The till has a hinged wood lid. This is not common as usually these little tills get broken or lost over time. There’s another mouse hole in the till on the vertical part of the right side under the lid toward the back. The trunk’s lid is held on to the back with old hinges. We don’t think these are original and you can see where there may have been other hinges at one point. The hinges have newer screws in them but still old, just not as old as the trunk. There are mouse holes, or wear at those two old hinge locations also. Just under the lid, on the front, there are a lot of little holes. Perhaps this had an upholstered top or something at one point as they look like little tack marks all along the top of the front board under the lid. The hand painting on the front and sides is a very colorful collection of flowers and organic motifs. The trunk is wonderfully hand painted. Inside, the trunk is clean but worn. There are old worm holes in the bottom and around the inside as you’d expect from an old item like this. The sides of the trunk as are dovetailed in to the front and back. There’s also some sort of swirls on the side in a very dark color and the color of the trunk. This is very hard to see because of the color. The dovetails are also hard to see but they are the thick kind. If you look closely in the black area you can see them. The back of the trunk is clean and has scrapes and nicks. And yes, it has a little critter hole down at the bottom! Whatever was in this trunk must have been very inviting to those dang critters!! The trunk has a wonderful patina to it. The trunk has some paint wear, paint loss, edge wear, nicks, scrapes, dings, fade, wear and overall age marks. There are spots, scuffs, streaks and grain lift. You can see all of this in the pictures and it’s what you’d expect from a trunk that’s almost 150 years old!! It’s a large size and measures. 48 inches wide at the top. 44.5 inches wide at the trunk. 20 3/4 inches deep at the top. 20 inches deep at the trunk. 2 1/2 inches high at the drawer. 18 1/2 inches deep inside the trunk. 50 x 29 x 25. We can also recommend a couple of shippers. Nwtransport at a o l. This is a very nice trunk for those of you who love Primitives or folk art. It’s one of a kind! It would certainly make for an interesting conversation piece. Thank you for looking at this item. Let us know if you have any questions. We regularly put up new items so check out our other items. Canvas surface is 36″ tall by 30 1/4″ wide unframed. Painting is 42″ tall by 36″ wide framed. A large, absolutely exquisite painting executed by H. Hechavarria was a Latin American Folk artist who painted in the 1960s and 1970s. My late paternal grandparents were active and enthusiastic art collectors and benefactors who discovered (and in some instances supported) several “outsider” artists in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s… Long before the genre was identified as “outsider” and they assembled a considerable collection of “outsider” art, folk art and primitive art which they enjoyed displaying in their expansive North Lakeshore Drive home. Upon their deaths many of the pieces in their collection were bequeathed to The Art Institute of Chicago. This painting, which has hung on our wall since 1973, has been immaculately maintained and is offered in its original frame. Please examine the photographs which accompany this listing: They are photographs of the actual original Hechavarria signed oil painting you will receive. Larry Connatser Listed Southern Folk Art Artist Fantastic Abstract Modernist Oil

Larry Connatser Listed Southern Folk Art Artist Fantastic Abstract Modernist Oil

Larry Connatser Listed Southern Folk Art Artist Fantastic Abstract Modernist Oil
LARRY CONNATSER LISTED SOUTHERN FOLK ART ARTIST FANTASTIC ABSTRACT MODERNIST OIL. With his unmistakable “dot” technique, this 1975 oil measures 9″ x 12″. With artist’s own blue painted frame, dimensions are 12″ x 15″. Signed, dated, and with exhibition number on the back. A few minor flakes to the paint, tiny white paper stuck to the edge of the frame, overall excellent original condition. Laurence Stuart Connatser, the only child of Roy and Evelyn (Meyers) Connatser, was born on September 17, 1938, in Birmingham, Alabama. The family lived in the vicinity of his paternal grandparents’ cotton farm, but, in the early 1940s, Roy Connatser, a mechanical engineer, relocated the family to Atlanta, where Larry attended public schools. The valedictorian of his class at Northside High School in 1956, young Connatser was also the editor of the school newspaper and an accomplished pianist. He studied music from the time he was eight until he began his college education, and, although he contemplated continuing his musical studies, he earned a bachelor of arts degree in English literature at Vanderbilt in 1961. While still a college student, Connatser and his friend and fellow student, Robert Moore Allen, opened Tulip Is Black, Nashville’s first coffeehouse. This business venture became a gathering place for poetry readings and folk singers. Although he had not yet begun to paint, Connatser was influenced by a Vanderbilt art professor, the Austrian-born expressionist Eugene Biel-Bienne, whose work was exhibited at the coffeehouse. Independently, he also studied art history, which exerted an influence on the unique style he developed as a self-taught artist. Following his graduation, Connatser moved to Chicago and worked for an educational publishing firm. In his spare time, he quickly poured his energy into painting and developed a distinctive style using acrylic paints executed on Masonite. Flattened forms and imaginary figures often outlined in black marker populated his dreamlike spaces and eventually evolved into paintings covered by dots. They were not conceived in the style of pointillism but have been likened to an expressionistic visual articulation of Larry’s musical training with an equivalent sense of rhythm and interlocking forms. His work was well received, and, beginning in 1963 with the financial aid of his parents, he was able to pursue painting full-time. His first solo exhibitions were in 1965 at St. Xavier College in Chicago and at Berman-Lipman Showrooms in Atlanta. Within months, his work was included in the sixty-ninth annual exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago and exhibited at the Newark Museum in New Jersey. He exhibited in Atlanta at the School of Architecture at Georgia Institute of Technology in 1967 and at Georgia State College Art Gallery in 1968. His work was exhibited the following year at the David Strawn Art Gallery in Jacksonville, Illinois, the Columbia Museum of Art in South Carolina, and in several group exhibitions at art galleries in Georgia and Illinois. The Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences (now the Chrysler Museum of Art) in Virginia acquired one of his paintings for its collection of contemporary American art. For the remainder of his life he maintained a residence there but later added an apartment in Atlanta while also maintaining a studio at his parents’ home in Highlands, North Carolina. His lifelong interest in music gave his work form and structure as he explored personal themes in paintings, which were usually untitled. His work changed with the change in locale, and he began executing monumental works and murals. Two public mural commissions executed in Atlanta during this decade gave him increased exposure, while exhibitions of his work in several venues elsewhere in the SouthSavannah College of Art and Design and Armstrong State College (now Armstrong Atlantic State University) in Georgia, the Columbia Museum of Art in South Carolina, the Hunter Gallery of Art (now the Hunter Museum of American Art) in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Edison Community College in Fort Myers, Florida, and private galleries in Atlantagarnered additional attention. Two of his commissioned murals brought Connatser’s art into daily contact with Atlanta’s visitors and citizens. The first, executed in 1974, was a seven-story mural on a commercial building next to a downtown parking garage. Commissioned by Urban Walls, it was a joint venture of the Arts Festival of Atlanta and Central Atlanta Progress with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Immediately recognized as an important part of the urban landscape, the mural was featured on the cover of the magazine of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on May 19, 1974. Another commission consisted of twin murals, seventy feet long and two stories high for the Decatur MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) station, part of Atlanta’s subway system. Completed in 1979, the murals have been featured in magazines and publications and appeared on the monthly transit card for January 2002. Connatser exhibited extensively in the following years but preferred to sell his work through personally staged private exhibitions for a select audience of interested people. He continued to show at private galleries on a limited basis and when invited, entered his work in larger exhibitions. He achieved wide regional recognition in his lifetime. Georgia Public Television included him in a documentary on Georgia’s up-and-coming artists, and he was selected to design the 1984 Arts Festival of Atlanta poster. He designed a floor mural at the Savannah College of Art and Design and was a guest artist at Coker College in South Carolina. During this period, his work was exhibited at museums in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Larry Connatser was an artist out of the mainstream. His innovative work was inspired by music, surrealism, and his intensive lifelong study of art history. Though untrained as a painter and despite his determination to live in the Deep South, Connatser’s work was widely known and was often favorably reviewed. By the time of his only retrospective exhibition, Southern Melodies, at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah in 2002, he had succumbed to AIDS, and his reputation had slipped into obscurity. His lively murals continue to grace the Decatur MARTA station. His work is in the permanent collection of the Telfair Museum of Art and of the Morris Museum of Art, which is the residuary beneficiary of the Connatser estate. American Folk Art Painting Black Farm Boy Eating Watermelon SATISFACTION 19X24
Other than that, I have no idea of its history. It is a 100% real painting and appears to be an oil painting. As you can see from the last photo where I used a light source on the left and a magnifying glass to show shadow on the right side of the strokes. It could also be from the Ozark mountain country area due to the hills and where I found it. This antique, real, original work of art is a large Americana painting (19″ wide by 24″ tall). It depicts a farm scene of a black boy sitting on hay enjoying a watermelon. The piece is signed at the middle bottom as “SATISFACTION”. He is barefoot, in short or rolled up pants and a baggy shirt and he’s sitting next to what looks like a hat. There are 2 paths leading behind him that lead to a wood fence and the other an old farm house. There is a dark moody sky in the background. The boys face is painted with lots of care and detail making him the focus. As I said, I found the piece in the wall so the frame has damage as you can see. There are a few nicks on the painting here and there. Since I didn’t know what to do with it, I didn’t clean, touch up or paint anything. It seems to be painted on some slate colored panel of some kind. I didn’t want to disassemble it to find out for fear of damaging it. But you can see a little of the backing of it in the photos. It measures 16″ x 24″ not including the frame. This complex piece has so many figures in it I kept losing count! Partial bio from internet. Born in 1932, Rosebee grew up on the fringes of the dying whaling industry in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where she shadowed her seafaring grandfather. For as long ago as she can remember his stories filled her bright imagination with vivid images of times long past and topics most folks call tall tales. Rosebee is often, and appropriately, labeled “America’s Premier Nautical and Patriotic Folk Artist”. It is a well-deserved title because her use of American flags and the inclusion of everyday characters of sailing fantasy and fiction are not a new invention for her – she employed them from the start, as she rendered memories to canvas. Rosebee is included in many museum collections and important private collections. The item “Outstanding Folk Art Painting by Rosebee.
