REDUCED! Mose Tolliver African-Am Folk Art BIG WATERMELON Painting Triangle, 1989

I acquired this painting and some others directly from Mose in Montgomery, Alabama in the summer of 1989. It is signed his typical backward S style and it has a pop top tab hanger. His former employer encouraged him to start painting, and Tolliver began to create images with house paint on pieces of plywood, Masonite, or old furniture. Unable to stand without crutches, he sat on his bed to paint, placing the board on his knees. Then in the 1980s Mose had a solo show at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, and was included in a folk art exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery, in Washington, D. His work is in the Collection of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and numerous other public and private collections. The item “REDUCED! Original Mose Tolliver (MoseT) Watermelon Folk Art Painting

Up for sale is a Mose Tolliver (Moset) original folk art painting. This is a 10″ x 17″ (the right side of the painting is closer to 10 1/4, irregular shaped wood canvas) painting of a watermelon, painted on a basic wooden board. It includes the pop tab from a soda can as a wall hanger, which is common with Moset paintings. The painting itself is in good shape and clean. I don’t see any scrapes or scratches in the paint. I don’t see any evidence of it ever being dropped or otherwise mistreated. The colors are still vibrant, I don’t see any sunfading. Overall this is a great painting from Moset in great condition. American Folk Art Painting Black Farm Boy Eating Watermelon SATISFACTION 19X24

Other than that, I have no idea of its history. It is a 100% real painting and appears to be an oil painting. As you can see from the last photo where I used a light source on the left and a magnifying glass to show shadow on the right side of the strokes. It could also be from the Ozark mountain country area due to the hills and where I found it. This antique, real, original work of art is a large Americana painting (19″ wide by 24″ tall). It depicts a farm scene of a black boy sitting on hay enjoying a watermelon. The piece is signed at the middle bottom as “SATISFACTION”. He is barefoot, in short or rolled up pants and a baggy shirt and he’s sitting next to what looks like a hat. There are 2 paths leading behind him that lead to a wood fence and the other an old farm house. There is a dark moody sky in the background. The boys face is painted with lots of care and detail making him the focus. As I said, I found the piece in the wall so the frame has damage as you can see. There are a few nicks on the painting here and there. Since I didn’t know what to do with it, I didn’t clean, touch up or paint anything. It seems to be painted on some slate colored panel of some kind. I didn’t want to disassemble it to find out for fear of damaging it. But you can see a little of the backing of it in the photos. Old Folk Art Hand Painted Watermelon Frame with Boys Eating Watermelon Chromolitho

Offered here is an original, framed and glazed early 20th century chromolithograph of four boys eating watermelon. The image itself is quite charming, but what is special is the hand painted figural watermelon folk art frame. I cannot date it with any real accuracy, but I believe it is from the first quarter of the 20th century. The frame measures 16 3/4″ x 24 1/4″. It is made from a solid 1/2 thick wood panel. It has almost all of its original paint. Beautifully shaded from the green rind to the red flesh and black seeds. It is need of some cleaning. There are some scrapes along the edges, and a few scratches and marks here and there, but nothing nothing to take away from the overall appearance. The chromolithograph has a hole and and some tears (see photos) on the left side. This is almost undetectable without close inspection. I believe there might have been some old restoration to the print and re-backing, which appears to have been done many years ago. Three-day inspection/return on all items I offer, if not as described.
