This is a poignant ex voto imported from Mexico City where it was made by Luis Vilchis of the famous retablero family. It has been hand painted on tin as is traditional and features the image of a parched illegal alien finding a water cache in the desert. There is an image of the Virgin Of Guadalupe above and the writing thanks her for saving his life. This work is signed by Luis and measures approximately 12″ in height by 10″ in width. Vintage Mexican Ex Voto Tin Painting Retablo, Young Family, Cortazar Gto, ca1940

Submitted for your thoughtful consideration: Ex-votos are a scene depicting a tragedy or someone with a grave illness or injury, saint or martyr that intervened to ” save the day ” and an inscription describing the tragic event and giving thanks for the divine intervention. Typically the saint depicted is. Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos. Late last year (2019) a couple of really old antique dealers had to downsize from their home on the San Francisco Peninsula. These examples of Mexican Faith and Folk Art are part of that collection. They were all wrapped in Mexican newspaper dated in the early 70? Some of my collector friends looked at them, informing me that they are all vintage and not the reproductions which abound in the market place. This lovely scene with the young couple and their child, is wonderfully painted, from Cortazar, Gto and dated 1940. There is wax on the surface, which we assume is from the candles at the church. Old Antique Vtg Dated 1916 Hand Painted Tin Folk Art Retablo Ex Voto Scarce Nice

This offering is for an antique 19th century hand painted tin Retablo Ex Voto. The painting was done in oils on tin and measures app. 7″ X 5″ The artwork features a view of four people on the left kneeling with something in their hands, looks like a stick and each of them has one. To the right is a saint or religious figure. At the bottom is a hand written description that includes a 1916 date in the first line. The condition is very nice with scattered wear, some losses and discoloration pretty much as seems to be typical. There are three tiny nail holes but there are no dents, creases or bends. Up for sale is an excellent vintage folk art style ex voto Mexican oil painting depicting a religious scene of a man praying on knees in a desert filled landscape with what appears to be Jesus to the upper right. This work is executed in oil on thin metal and reads a description of the scene at the bottom of the work, signed Sr. Martin Ruiz and dated 1980. Measuring 8.25 x 11 inches this painting is a little beauty full of color but appears to have had some type of darkening varnish placed over. A small hole is present top center to hang the work.
