Offered today is a Rare Antique Folk Art Miniature canoe paddle with Original Paint Decorated scene titled “Autumn Scenery”. To the local tourists. Signed “Autumn Scenery” “1000 Islands”. Measures 21-3/4″ long x 2-3/8″ wide. Highly collectible and sought after for their folk art qualities. NO repairs or in-painting/touchups. This example is especially fine and rare with the inclusion of the paddlewheel boat and autumn colored trees against the deep blue sky reflected in the water. Keech paddles are well known to collectors of rustic accessories. They are appreciated for their finely-detailed, painted scenes, as well as for the delicate quality of each carved paddle. They date from 1890 to 1920 and can turn up anywhere in the U. And Canada, since they traveled home with far-flung vacationers who had visited upstate New York. The maker of these paddles was Alpheus E. Lawrence River in the 1000 Islands region of northern New York. When he was 30 years old, while still making a living as a carpenter in the familys boat-building business, Alpheus began focusing his talents as an artist. In addition to producing large paintings of steamships, sailboats, and landscapes, he established a studio (pictured below) to make and sell small souvenirs, the most popular of which were his paint-decorated model canoe paddles. This is a rare find. An amazing large c1840 American painted portrait frame. Beautiful original, dry, crackled oxblood red surface on 3 3/8 wide molding with pine base. Paint retention is excellent as is the overall condition. Solid lap joint construction with mitered corners. Measures 30 7/8 x 36 1/2 with a 25 x 30 3/8 rabbet. Howard Finster cutout painting. Original painting on wood. Brush strokes on image and title. Looks like marker on the base and the back. Title ” Teen Age Youth Of Our Lord”. Its getting harder to find his earlier pieces. There is a scratch on the top of the base about 1 1/2 long (see pic) the colors are very good. This listing is for an early school-girl embroidery sampler under glass made by Jane Gage of Colerain and dated April 18, 1818 – 200 years ago. It has some wonderful open-work stitchery in the words “Jane Gage” along with many other stitching styles. There is a verse (with a sweet misspelling of the word “Lord”) : Lold keep me for I trust in thee. The frame is an amazing faux tiger maple striped hand-painted frame dating to the mid-1800s or earlier. The framed sampler measures about 10 by 14 inches and the sampler itself measures about 7 by 11 inches. It is backed in acid-free mat board. Condition is good, the stitching is strong and clear. It has the expected age toning of the passing of the 200 years since it was worked. Please review the photos and ask any question you may have as the photos are part of the description. Apx 1940s Nearly 2 ft long.. Apx 23″x14″x7 , weighs apx 8 lbs , very solid.. I believe this was a collectors rocker for antique dolls. An amazing conversation piece!!!! We have just enjoyed up on a tall cabinet counter in our game room.. Has a lot of aging/ historical wear showing but nothing major.. All hand carved and painted I was told.. Was told this originally came from a circus toy collector, they owned several pieces for at least 10-20 yrs before offered. This was old when they obtained.. And I’m not sure how to tell.. There is some chipping and peeling in different places as you can see from the pictures and is been like that for as long as we’ve had it.. It feels like wood and it sounds like wood but please use the pictures for your own judgment. The head was a separate piece..
