One of the most highly regarded American self- taught artists began life as the son of a sharecropper and farm overseer on the Rittenour farm. Mose Tolliver was the youngest of seven sons born into the Ike Tolliver family of twelve children. Olive School briefly through the third grade. I didn’t like school. I remember I wanted to be outdoors working with my older brothers or even stacking wood. One thing I remember about our farm house, it was just a shack, but my Mama had pictures all over the walls. Rare and Unique Mose Tolliver, Mose T, painting. One of only a few that I had the pleasure of seeing him paint with children on the bus and not adults. It was not his typical subject matter. Enjoy it like I have for years. Mose was a self-taught artist. He started painting after a pallet of marble fell on his legs and crushed it while working at the furniture store. Mose began to paint on any surface-furniture, scraps, plywood, packing crate sides, Masonite, metal trays, board remnants, throw away chairs or other abandoned surfaces given to him. Mose used what he calls “pure paint, ” house paint-oil based at first, and then water-based latex. At first, he drew birds and flowers, then he expanded to people and children and some personal requests. Mose used his house on Sayre street as his art gallery. I would go down there and look at what new pieces he had painted and were for sale. He liked to talk about his painting. This piece is one of the unusual pieces I got the pleasure of purchasing. Mose Tolliver, Flower Folk Art Outsider Artist
Mose Tolliver – Folk Art, Outsider Artist. This is one of Mose Tolliver’s hard-to-find flower paintings. It is 16″ x 16 1/2″, house paint/acrylic on salvaged wood with his own hanging tab on the rear. It is in very good condition although has imperfections associated with folk art. Mose Tolliver, born in in Alabama, is one of the more celebrated self taught artists from the south. He was a prolific artist who work steadily until around the time he died in 2006. His work has been exhibited extensively in the US and around the world since his first solo exhibition in 1981. In 1982 his work was included in the influential folk art exhibition “Black Folk Art In America, 1930 – 1980″ at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Since then his work has been acquired by many museums including the Smithsonian. I loved Mose T’s work and acquired this work in the early 2000’s from a collector who bought it directly from Mose T.
