ANTIQUE 19th CENTURY AMERICAN FEDERAL CHEST WITH FOLK ART PAINT DECORATION ; A LARGE AMERICAN PINE CHEST OF DRAWERS CIRCA 1825 WITH A WILD FOLK ART PAINTED SURFACE THAT WAS PROBABLY DONE IN THE 1960’s OR 1970’s. PROBABLY INSPIRED BY SOME MUSEUM FOLK ART CHEST. PLEASE LOOK AT PICS CAREFULLY FOR DAMAGE. THE CASE IS IN GOOD CONDITION, BUT I BELIEVE THAT SOMEONE TRIED TO DISTRESS THE DRAWER FRONTS AS THEY HAVE MORE WEAR THAN FROM NORMAL USE. THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CHEST HAS A SPLIT IN THE TWO BOARDS ALONG THE GLUE JOINT. THERE IS A LARGE CHUNK MISSING FROM THE TOP AS SEEN IN THE PICS. ALL DRAWERS ARE DOVETAILED CONSTRUCTION AND EARLY SQUARE NAILS. 46″ WIDE, 45″ HIGH, 18 DEEP ; AS FOUND CONDITION QUESTIONS? Here is a wonderful primitive 19th Century watercolor of a mother and her child from Maine 1830. As you can see there is plenty of color and detail in the watercolor. There is a beautiful decorated carpet at their feet. It is in its original grain painted frame. The backing was removed and updated to an acid free black mat and archival corners. The size of the watercolor is 9 X 10 1/2. ” The frame is 12 3/4″ 14 5/8. Provenance is from the Lynn Dingus Collection in Ohio. That is her label on the back of the watercolor. Scandinavian Folk Art Tine Bent Box 19th Century Painted. Circa 1890 1920 made in Norway, Denmark or Sweden, it is made from thin pieces of steam bentwood, laced together with tree root twisted handmade rope. It has two vertical posts to hold the lid. To open you lightly pull apart the side posts, then the lid is loose to open. It has the original folk art painting done on both sides. It has an old restoration on one wing, otherwise in good condition. I see two screws one on each end to hold the posts. Old looking and clean on the inside, The handle is held on the a thin piece of wood. It has a thick patina on the lid. Wooden pegs are showing on the bottom. It measures 11 ½ inches long x 4 inches wide 3 inches tall, and 1 inch for the handle. SALE PRICE This is a Fabulous Americana Folk Art Antique 19th Century Oil Painted Head Cloth Rag Girl Doll in Calico Dress 28 Inch. I have had a few of these Americana folk art painted head cloth rag dolls over the years and I always marvel at the beautiful rendering of the hand painted facial features, hair, hands, feet and eyes that give these gals such a distinct glow about them. This tall 28 inch doll was beautifully made from cotton muslin, and rag/cotton/something-crunchy stuffed. Her folk art hand painting continues to her neck and upper torso. She was treadle machine sewn and hand stitched. She has mitt hands with opposing thumb, well defined fingers and toes, a well proportioned body (one arm a little longer than the other), jointed at the hip, knee and shoulders so she can sit, and she has some aging, staining and wear to the fabric as you would expect of an antique cloth doll. The shoulders have some restitching/repair work. Her oil painted face and hair were hand painted and beautifully rendered. The whites of her eyes were never painted. There is some wear to the paint and three fabric splits (one to the left eye and two to the chin). Along with her blue eyes, she has a realistically painted nose, flesh color skin, delightfully smiling heart shaped mouth, bright rosy cheeks and a molded chin achieved through sewn darts. Her facial structure fabric was gathered around the top of the head, and dark blond brush-stroke painted curls define the hair. The pink and white print calico dress is not original that I know of, but fits her very well. It was treadle machine sewn the wrist cuffs have been pinned to fit the wrist better so that her hands can be viewed. She has no underthings, but wears a white lace trimmed dimity apron so that her waist and form are defined. I always marvel at the hand painting and like to think that artists or itinerant artists possibly painted the heads for these dolls. They look so much like portraiture of the period. A large mid-Victorian sailors woolwork picture of HMS Northumberland in an ornate gilt frame. HMS Northumberland (built 1866) was the last of the three Minotaur class armoured frigates built for the Royal Navy during the 1860’s. She was in active service until 1899 and was broken up in 1935. An excellent example of the craft. Frame – 69cm x 59cm. Picture – 49cm x 39cm. Very good for age. Frame has minor losses. We offer a selection of 17th to 20th century pictures, including portraits, landscapes, marines, folk art, genre scenes, landscapes, cattle, sporting art, animal and still life paintings. We aim to provide viewers with as much knowledge as possible about each of our pictures. Thus, we provide several photos, including the back and any faults, along with a detailed condition report. Whilst great care is taken in packaging our paintings and losses are rare, the fragile nature of some frames makes damage in transit a possibility. Unfortunately shippers do not insure frames for this reason and so they cannot be insured. We cannot therefore offer compensation for a frame that is damaged in transit.
