Original autumn harvest celebration painting carving on wood. As the artist, I cut the pattern on a scroll saw from poplar wood. The wood is 3/4 of an inch thick. Sides and back and front are all painted and are protected with a polyurethane finish. The polyurethane finish was put on in 1996. Wonderful folk art painting of an autumn green house with a cardinal bird, apples, a milk bottle, a pumpkin, black cat, scarecrow and pink rose buds. There is a lot of gold mica powder paint on this. Back is initialed and has biblical verse. Condition is very nice and clean with some natural imperfections in the wood which give this a quaintness and charm. House can sit or stand on a shelf. Size is approximately 5 inches by 7 inches at widest and longest dimensions. Please write any questions. No signature can be found on this painting and it is in original, as found condition with a soiled varnish layer but no apparent losses to paint surface, aside from three small scratches in upper third. A good representation of one of Roseland’s most famous subjects (“Mixing The Love Potion”) probably from the early 1900’s. Through the publication of “Sunday supplement” prints, Roseland’s genre work in this series became very well known and reached thousands of home viewers, inspiring imitation by many amateur artists. For sale is an outstanding early 20th century black Americana naïve folk art style oil painting. From a Maryland Private estate. One “gets” this painting almost immediately when viewing it. The woman stands against the country picket fence looking up towards the sky while wearing her Sunday best black and white checkered dress. Her mind wondering off, dreaming of a better life. Perhaps she is thinking about being an actress or a singer in a hopping jazz club somewhere in New York or Chicago. Or a dancer touring the world with a dance troupe visiting Paris and the other major European cities that she only reads about in books and newspapers. She may just be dreaming of a little simpler life not consumed with the daily rugged chores of living on a rural farm which consists of work from sun up until sundown. You can tell that while content with her simple life on a southern farm she hopes and dreams for so much more for herself. In her eyes you can see this dream may never come to be. But she dreams the dream. On the porch either a husband or one of her children leisurely strums a tune on the banjo. Two ducks seem to enjoy her company by the picket fence in the foreground. This painting is signed in the lower right corner. Like many Black Americana paintings the artist cannot be found in our research. This painting is oil on hard stock paper board. It appears to be dated on the reverse either 4/3/11, or 4/23/41. We cannot tell accurately. Please see the close-up detail picture for consideration. Condition: The painting being in overall good condition for age. Some yellowing of the surface varnish but over all good for age. Some small areas of paint surface lost on the outer edges near the frame contact area. The frame having age-appropriate wear with numerous layers of built-up varnish coatings. American Folk Art Painting Black Farm Boy Eating Watermelon SATISFACTION 19X24

Other than that, I have no idea of its history. It is a 100% real painting and appears to be an oil painting. As you can see from the last photo where I used a light source on the left and a magnifying glass to show shadow on the right side of the strokes. It could also be from the Ozark mountain country area due to the hills and where I found it. This antique, real, original work of art is a large Americana painting (19″ wide by 24″ tall). It depicts a farm scene of a black boy sitting on hay enjoying a watermelon. The piece is signed at the middle bottom as “SATISFACTION”. He is barefoot, in short or rolled up pants and a baggy shirt and he’s sitting next to what looks like a hat. There are 2 paths leading behind him that lead to a wood fence and the other an old farm house. There is a dark moody sky in the background. The boys face is painted with lots of care and detail making him the focus. As I said, I found the piece in the wall so the frame has damage as you can see. There are a few nicks on the painting here and there. Since I didn’t know what to do with it, I didn’t clean, touch up or paint anything. It seems to be painted on some slate colored panel of some kind. I didn’t want to disassemble it to find out for fear of damaging it. But you can see a little of the backing of it in the photos.
