Up for sale is a beautiful antique folk art oil painting depicting a snowy country landscape. A cute homestead sits within the cold landscape with only a single figure standing directly at the works center wearing a red hooded cloak carrying a bundle of firewood. I particularly like the varied trees that are painted from dead looking with no leafs to right tall vibrant green pines to the left. Low mountains fills the background with slight a slight portion of the setting sun visible casting some inhibited orange hues. This painting is unsigned and well executed for a presumably self taught artist. The painting is executed in oil on artist board measuring 12.5 x 21 inches while the original gold gesso wood frame measures 17.75 x 26.75 inches. The condition of the painting shows some surface abrasions and minor loss while the frame also shows some gesso loss and minimal looseness at the corner joinings. Rare Antique Folk art oil. Dimensions: 22 x 19 inches without frame. 25 x 22 inches with frame. Description: Oil on canvas. Titled Skowhegan Maine on the back. Very interesting folk art painting with view from the Skowhegan Falls before the dams. The scene shows figures cutting wood and people in boats picking up logs from the water. Log driving was popular in Skowhegan from the early 19th century until it ended in 1976. The first settlers cut the trees on their farms to build log cabins and barns. When they started to run out of trees in this area, so they had to cut the trees up the river and float them down river to Skowhegan. They built sawmills on the Skowhegan island in order to saw lumber to build the houses in Skowhegan village. Later they built pulp and paper mills up and down the Kennebec river, and began to cut pulpwood for making paper. The painting originates from a Norwegian family whose relations worked in Maine. A very rare oil and a collectors dream. Condition: Ready to hang. The oil could use a light cleaning, due to the old age. Otherwise fine with no holes, tears or missing paint. The original salon frame has minor scratches due to the age. All our items are located at our gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting.
