Antique Aafa Folk Art Double Sided Checkerboard Game Board Original Paint Red

ANTIQUE AAFA FOLK ART DOUBLE SIDED CHECKERBOARD ORIGINAL PAINT RED AND WHITE. Up for sale is this old hand painted checkerboard. It has a great folk art feel to it! The board is red and white with worn edges, paint loss and hand wear. The gaming part has beautiful bright red with white color alternating squares. The board is a 12 x 12 game field. It appears to be made from one large piece of wood with a couple of cracks in it. It measures 29″ L x 18″ W and is about 1.25 thick. It weighs about 7 lbs. There are two newer picture hangers on the back side to hang the checkerboard on the wall. You can see this in the pictures. Also on the back is a game. We don’t know what the game is, but it’s black rectilinear lines with a cross looking thing in the center of the board. This side also has worn edges, scrapes and hand wear. This is a GREAT double-sided game board!! As mentioned, there’s some edge wear, paint loss, nicks, scrapes, scratches and dings. Also, at the side of each players side, there was probably a small wood trim that would separate their checkers from the playing field. The paint is missing along this thin line as you can see in the pictures. All of these “issues” are just as you’d expect from and item of this age… It’s still just fabulous!!! 1944 Haiti is a founding member of the art movement called “Saint Soleil” along with other well known artists like Prospere Pierre Louis, Louisiane St. Fleurant and Dieuseul Paul. He is featured in many books including. Where Art is Joy: Haitian Art: The First Forty Years by Seldon Rodman. He has exhibited around the world and his work is well regarded by collectors. Painting condition: Excellent – Approximate size 30″ X 40″ inches (ships rolled). À la suite de son voyage en 1975 en Haïti, qui sera aussi son dernier, André Malraux décide de consacrer un chapitre entier de son livre L’intemporel – la Métamorphose des Dieux édité chez Gallimard en 1976 au mouvement Saint Soleil. Évidemment l’ouvrage contribue de manière foudroyante à la reconnaissance mondiale de ces artistes perdus au milieu d’Haïti. Malraux illustre une pleine page de son livre avec une uvre de Levoy Exil et ose même écrire page 330 Picasso voulait que ses tableaux du Palais des Papes atteignissent la liberté qu’atteint celui de Levoy Exil parce que le peintre haïtien ignore la peinture des autres. Mais ces tableaux d’Avignon sont manifestement des uvres professionnelles du XXe siècle postérieures au cubisme, et dont la frénésie d’échapper à l’art appartient à celui-ci, alors que le peintre haïtien ne tente pas d’échapper à un englobant qu’il ignore. Malraux est impressionné par la force et la qualité des uvres de Saint-Soleil qu’il trouve très proche de l’art brut. With the arrival of video and video cassettes during 1980s In Ghana (West Africa) a small-scale film distribution / mobile Cinema was created. This small size mobile “Cinema” operators were equipped with a television a Video and sometimes with a small portable generator and were moving from town to town from village to village operating and showing their films! (During the day inside social clubs or houses and during the night in the open air). In order to attract more customers and in order to advertise their mission and business the need of huge posters was created and born. Talented artists after viewing the film were creating large size posters using oil paint on canvas (Because of unavailability and high cost of imported canvas , The artists were using used flour sacks sewn together). The artist had the freedom to add or change scenes seen or not seen in the film in order to make the poster more attractive (This is the reason that this hand painted posters are more interesting as ART than the normal posters since each of this hand painted poster is UNIQUE and except the film content it also express the artist himself). These posters were rolled or folded and easy to move around with the mobile Cinema. Because of the posters ” hard ” life (Folded or rolled, under the rain and sun and display for several months during their rounds all over Ghana) most of the surviving posters have damage at the end of the canvas, peelings, cracking and other damages. By the mid 1990s the mobile Cinema business declined and almost collapsed since television and video was more widely available in Ghana. The profits of the mobile Cinema operators were also reduced and they were not able to afford the “expensive” talented artists to paint their posters anymore. At the present days they have to rely with Photocopy paper posters in order to survive and reduce cost.
