Antique 19th Century New England Winter Landscape Folk Art Oil Painting Signed

Antique 19th century, c1850s, original New England folk art oil painting. Depicts a winter landscape scene complete with a large house on a lake. The lake is surrounded by detailed trees and foliage; another house can be seen further down with trees disappearing into the horizon. Above the scene a dark sky can be noted with ominous clouds rolling through. Very well done with super detail, especially in the trees and plants. Boasts great capture of light, depth and shadow. Medium is oil on canvas done in a Folk Art style. Canvas affixed to early stretcher bars with antique nails. Signed by the artist in the bottom right corner. Looks to read O. Battis ; worthy of further research. Has a great patina with lots of age toning and cracking to the paint which is typical of a piece with this much age. In my opinion the toning and cracking add to the character of the piece and enhance it by acting as a testament to its age and authenticity. Two small puncture holes along the right side but not noticeable until a closer inspection is done (see photo 8). Small knick to center of the painting. Eye catching and appealing. Direct from artist, hand signed, dated, and titled on back of painting. Painting is on a stretched canvas, gallery wrapped, no staples on sides. Sides are painted black so no need to frame. ALBERT WEBSTER DAVIES Primitive Folk Art Winter Painting Original Oil

Mr Davies was known as “The Male Grandma Moses” and all of his paintings are in the same New England folk art naive genre style. They feature scenes from his home state New Hampshire and other New England states. This painting is signed by artist on front and titled “In the Old Days” on label attached on back. Hand painted Oil on masonite. The painting itself measures 18″ by 24″ and comes in original gold gilt 22″ by 28″ frame. The frame has some damage but the painting is in original condition with no repairs and could use a light cleaning (a bit yellowed). Kennedy Galleries is one of the oldest galleries in the United States dating back to 1874. For over 125 years it was known as being the foremost authority on American Art. Pioneer economist and philanthropist Roger Ward Babson (see internet) a member of a prominent Gloucester Massachusetts family whose American roots were established in 1637. Antique c. 1900 Folk Art Oil on Board Painting Winter Solace in Northeast

This is a lovely impressionistic / Folk Art c. 1900 oil painting done by an unknown artist on Academy Board which artistic base was well-used at the turn of the Century (1900) – this painting was done by the capable artist to create a very wintry scene where the centerpiece is a small early American Cape type of house nestled at the end of a large snow-covered field, all of which is surrounded by a rickety wooden post & beam fence – there is a path in the snow leading from the forefront of the painting towards the snow-bound house – the path crosses a long frozen duck pond in front of the house. The artist has done a masterful job of creating a feeling of quiet & cold solace as one views this small antique cape against a backdrop of very gray & dark- white clouds that fill the sullen sky above the house with the threat of more snow coming soon – in the right forefront, the artist has placed an ancient gnarled large oak tree leaning far to its right which appears to be near the end of its life, all of which suggests an ominous atmosphere – the large oak tree in the foreground also helps to create depth perception when one looks at the much smaller house & barn within the total picture. The artist has done an excellent job in using his palette of muted gray, white, brown, & black colors to produce the deep winter feeling of cold & solitude for the viewer – further juxtaposition of colors between the dark green of the row of pine trees in the background located behind the house help the off-white color of the house & the barn roof stand out against the foreground of the snowy white field & pond. The painting was done on an Academy Blackboard which is in very good condition for its antique age – the artist board measures a generous 18″ x 24″ size. The painting is greatly enhanced by its original walnut wooden frame – the frame measures 20″ x 24″ & is in very good antique condition.
