It has wonderful painted plaster waves and very detailed sails. It must have taken days to make this. It has an American flag at the stern. Very nice size can be hung on the wall or set on a shelf for a very sophisticated look. It measures 10 1/2 inches long 6 inches high. There is a chip out of the glass in the upper right and lower left corners. Fabulous Antique New England Folk Art Diorama Sailing Ship with Lighthouse

This one is on board; the other on glass. This diorama is a wonderful piece of antique Folk Art, a survivor of an art form that is becoming quite rare. This fabulous piece is in an old, faded, gilded Victorian period frame and was created on board. The piece is not behind glass, it is not a shadowbox, and it is currently a little dirty from years of storage. The sails are cream colored, showing discoloration and grime from age. The hull is painted black with a stripe and two tiny cabins on the deck; the black paint exhibits craquelure (alligatoring). The front sail is missing a small piece at the top; its outline can still be seen on the painting. The ocean is very choppy, dark green and blue with white caps. The lighthouse stands of an outcropping of rocks in the lower left of the piece; the lighthouse is a carved piece of wood. There are painted clouds in the sky and a few sea gulls. This is not signed, as far as I can tell. I believe this easily dates to the last quarter of the 19th century, if not earlier. This piece is quite dirty. I gave it a very light cleaning but it would benefit and look much brighter with additional cleaning. The frame is also dirty and discolored with chips and bumps. The back is wooden board, which I believe is the back of the painting. The piece (including the frame) is 12.5″ h x 18.5″ w. This is an amazing piece that reflects the sea going industry which was and is such a big part of south eastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands. A genuine piece of Americana. Up for sale is a wonderful antique 19th century original nautical Folk Art nautical oil painting signed Avelle. It’s painted on a thick wooden board, signed by the artist on the bottom left, and done with rich color. It is a wonderful scene depicting several ships at battle while one burns. The piece is painted with a lovely stylized folk art approach with a lovely composition. It’s in nice condition and measures 20 3/4 inches by 11 3/4 inches framed. Antique 19th Century Sailors Woolwork Folk Art Ship Picture Hms Northumberland

A large mid-Victorian sailors woolwork picture of HMS Northumberland in an ornate gilt frame. HMS Northumberland (built 1866) was the last of the three Minotaur class armoured frigates built for the Royal Navy during the 1860’s. She was in active service until 1899 and was broken up in 1935. An excellent example of the craft. Frame – 69cm x 59cm. Picture – 49cm x 39cm. Very good for age. Frame has minor losses. Large Paul Kitchin Lynchburg, VA Folk Art Nautical Ship Oil Painting

Offered here is a large oil painting on a thin wood or fiber board by local Lynchburg, VA artist Paul Kitchin. It measures about 39 ½ x 27 and has some brown spots and wear around the edges. Information about the Artist from Retrospect Antiques. Paul was born and raised in England. While in England he was trained as a sign painter. Being both dyslexic and frightened of heights he looked for a new profession. The walls of his shop were bare so he decided to try to paint some pictures on them to help decorate the shop. After decorating his shop walls he became a full-time artist. He was featured in a program about his work by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and had several one man shows in England. His work was shown in “The Museum of Rural Life” in Glastonbury and Hambledon Gallery in Blandford Forum. After living in Los Angeles he moved to Chicago for a while and finally settled in Lynchburg, Virginia. Paul was pursuing his love of painting when he died in April 2002. The hull is painted in a black/blue and white color scheme. The sail boat has a bridge and an aft quarterdeck, with side davits for two included lifeboat. The model comes with an assortment of masts and sails, and an early copy of the original American flag with 13 stars. The model is in good antique condition, with wear and wonderful patina commensurate with age and fragility. There are losses to detailing and finish. Offered for your consideration is an antique maritime painting. It was executed in oil on board and measures 12″ x 18 1/2″. There are some areas of loss notable in the lower left corner as shown, and the surface is dirty. There is a partial newspaper article affixed to the back I added the plastic to preserve the paper as it was rapidly flaking off! That describes the scene. By researching the partial article I found a match to an article in the New Orleans Bee newspaper dated Saturday July 16, 1898. Just a very cool antique maritime painting with an unusual story to add to your collection!
