Antique Folk Art Blue Painted, Decorated Box Pennsylvania German Style Iron Hasp
Gorgeous antique hand-painted box with hinged lid, bracket feet, scalloped front apron, hand-wrought iron hardware, and a glorious chippy paint surface, blue with stylized leaf flourishes and a (very worn) yellow bird. The paint is old, and there appears to be an even older green paint beneath. Possibly with Pennsylvania German immigrants. The corner joints are rabbet joints. The hinges are strap hinges. CONDITION NOTES: Some notable paint loss, chippy surface, please view photos. There appears to be an even older green paint under the blue. Iron hardware is rusty and the hasp for some reason has been curled up. Some wood shrinkage, separating but holding together. Size: 13″ x 9-5/8″ x 7.25. DUE TO THE FACT THAT CAMERAS AND COMPUTERS HAVE COLOR VARIATIONS, WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DIFFERENCES IN PICTURES VERSUS ACTUAL COLOR. WE TRY TO DESCRIBE THE ACTUAL COLORS TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITY. Bearing its original red and blue paint, together with Pennsylvania German floral decorations. Appears to be poplar wood. Bears two painted names, one on each side. I can only discern one last name being HUNTZ. I can not read the name on the other side rail. Both names bear the date of 1921 underneath, presumed to be a wedding or dowry rack. One full width drawer in folk art paint in red, and one small drawer underneath, this drawer in soldier blue and red paint. Later hang up hooks on back. The paint is DRY and WORN and shows the great patina and oxidation we all look for. This condition of the paint may be a little rough for some, but others will accept the natural wear. Displays beautifully, and is a nice medium size without being overbearing. Tall to bottom drawer. As described above, and as shown in the photos. No reproduction without prior written consent. Thank you and Enjoy! BE SURE YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH THIS ITEM AS DESCRIBED AND AS PICTURED. If the item fails to sell when the listing has ended, only then will we possibly consider an offer for the item. And again, we will NOT respond to any message received while the listing is active. A wonderfully painted wooden two sided sign advertising Groceries and Provisions. The sign is painted on an old ironing board probably maple wood, not uncommon as ironing boards made of this material did not warp and were readily available. The sign was painted by Damon Herbel Shuey: 2. Damon Herbel Shuey (6) was born July 15, 1869. In his younger years he worked at coal mines as slate-picker, in the summer and went to school in the winter. He afterwards worked in brick yards, in steel works, saw mills and other hard work. He afterwards took up sign painting and is considered very good. Corner Spruce and Guilford Streets is his residence. The sign is from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. Amazing that he signed the piece and to have specific provenance on a hand painted sign is rare. The sign is in excellent condition with more wear to one side as expected form an outdoor sign. As stated painted on a wooden ironing board, 63 1/4″ long x 11 3/4″ wide and 7/8 thick. The item “Antique Folk Art Painted Wooden Groceries Sign Lebanon Pennsylvania” is in sale since Friday, March 2, 2018. Size: 20 3/4 ” x 14 1/2 ” x 3/4. Condition: As high-definition photographed. Corner damage, fading, wormy, etc… Definitely shows its age. Displays well, in my opinion. Note about age – It is possible that the panel dates to the early 1800s, however, my educated opinion is that it dates to much earlier. A number of antique dealers have opined that the panel may even date to the 17th century. Any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for looking at this listing… And please take a peek at my antique quartersawn oak hall tree (which the panel is resting on) listing. This rare paint decorated, hand dovetailed, Bible box was made in Pennsylvania in the late 18th century. Constructed of pine with wrought iron strap hinges, it measures 18.25″ long, 13″ deep, and 6.5 tall. The salmon and red feather-grained paint is both colorful and well executed. The visible nails on the bottom appear to be hand wrought T-head shaped nails. Overall, the condition is very good for its age and use. There are two shrinkage separations on the lid due to drying over a 200 year period, and an old 2.5 triangular break-out caused by a trim nail (see photos). The paint has appropriate wear patterns but is especially colorful on the front. There is a 1 loss to the applied lower right base molding. The wrought iron strap hinges are excellent. Pen and ink and ink wash on paper, measuring 5 ½ x 4 3/8 inches, some toning, slight mat burn, the image is drawn on the back of a manuscript receipt, the receipt bears the signature of Benedict Reynolds, Zachariahs father. A very nice, calligraphic, folk art image of a unicorn and a bird perched atop a curious structure. The drawing is placed in an archival mat. A brief synopsis of the life of Zachariah Reynolds and his family history is here reprinted from the History of Washington County. REYNOLDS, who owns 160 acres of fine land, is situated in South Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, four and one-half miles east of Washington, was born in the old house which then stood on the present site of the barn, on this farm, December 31, 1828. His father was Zachariah and his paternal grandfather was Benedict Reynolds, while his mother was Mary Little and his maternal grandfather was Moses Little. Benedict Reynolds was born in Maryland and from there he enlisted in the American Army. After serving for six months in the War of the Revolution, he reenlisted and took part in the battle of the Brandywine, and several others under the direct command of Gen. Washington, as well as in the battle of Cowpens. After the war he married Elizabeth Harmon and came to Washington County and settled in South Strabane Township. When he built his house he constructed it after the old Maryland plan, with the doors facing the east. He spent the rest of his life there, living to the age of ninety-seven years, and was buried in the cemetery on his own land. Zachariah Reynolds was born in South Strabane Township and when he reached manhood married Mary Little. Her father was born in Ireland and came to America when a young man. He married Margaret Locke, also a native of Ireland, they had four children: John, Mary, David and Moses. To Zachariah and Mary (Little) Reynolds was born one son, D. The mother died when thirty years of age. Zachariah was subsequently married to Mary Huston, and they had three children: George, who lives in California; Mary, who is the wife of William Weir, residing on Morgan Avenue, Washington; and Seth H. Who is a farmer in South Strabane Township. Zachariah Reynolds was a man of natural talent, and was better educated than many men of his day, being particularly gifted as a penman. He did quite a large part of the drawing for the charts of the internal organs for Dr. Leatherman, of Houstonville, Pa. And his pen work was admired all over the county. He lived into his seventy-ninth year. His burial was first by the side of his wife in the home cemetery, but later D. Reynolds had the bodies of his parents removed and interred anew in the Washington Cemetery. His second wife survived him and died when aged 84 years History of Washington County, pp. Source: McFarland, Joseph F. 20th Century History of the City of Washington and Washington County, Pennsylvania and Representative Citizens.
