Howard Finster Youth of Jesus -Outsider Folk Art. 20,189 works since 1976 by Howard Finster July 24, 1991. Howard Finster (1916- 2001). Original Catalogue # 918. With 7 small angels around small trees. Predominate colors in blue, pink , and black. This folk art “cut out devotional” is numbered and is painted by Finster in in tractor enamel on plywood. The front of the piece features a Renaissance styled portrait of Jesus at 12. The portrait has black flowing hair and decorated with Finster’s miniature hallmark angels. On the front is inscribed. Of sixty-one and without any artistic training, began to paint toward his. Initial goal of 5,000 works of art. Some 40,000 works of art later, he spread his vision across the country. Used tractor paint to paint details on earlier pieces. In later years, he preferred a felt tip marker, sometimes using an entire marker on one painting. In the 1980’s, I was lucky to have visited Howard several times at his Paradise Garden in Summerville, where he had created “Paradise Gardens”, the outdoor environment that he began in the early 1960s. Howard was extremely talkative and charismatic, with a generosity of spirit that drew people to him. He would chat nonstop to his visitors as he worked on a cutout piece of wood- obsessively painting. I photographed him many times. Here is a hand colored photo that took of his pink Cadillac. He was always so friendly. I remember one time when I visited, he gave me a big bowl of plums from his garden. Even as his health failed in the 1990s, Howard remained the folk-art icon as he is today. Moses Tolliver (1918 to 2006) who painted under the name Mose T, with a backward s, is considered one of the founding figures of what became known as Outsider Art. He grew up in rural Alabama and taught himself to paint, because he didnt learn to read until later in life. He crushed his foot while working in a warehouse, and began to paint for a living even before he was discovered by art critics and galleries. He usually painted in house paint on plywood or discarded boards, whimsical and sometimes erotic pictures of animals, humans, and flora, watermelons and birds. His work has been displayed at the White House, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and many other museums and galleries. This extraordinarily charming late 1800s-early 1900s all wood, hand carved and painted crucifix measures 13 3/8 x 8 ¼ overall with a corpus measuring 7 ½ head to toe. It is largely untouched with worn and chipped paint history that is stable and shows several layers of color. The latest has some vivid red accents and a painted skull and cross bones under Jesus feet. There is no insect damage and only minor splits and repairs.
