Antique Early African American Portrait Prosperous Handsome Black Man Folk Art

This attractive and exceptional rarity in oil on canvas measures 34 1/8″ x 24 1/2″ framed; 30″ x 24″ actual and depicts a handsome and affluent young African American gentleman wearing a dark coat with large brass buttons, a colorful wastcoat and black cravat. Dating from the 1840’s-50’s, the naively painted portrait has great presence and presents a confident man with close-cropped hair and intense gaze. It was cleaned and relined in the 1980’s (the era of the frame) and you will note extensive in-painting in the background and to his suit lower right. There is apparent bitumen crazing in his hair and neckwear and there is NO apparent inpaint to the face/head. There is notable separation of the original canvas from the lining canvas, especially upper left and the paint layer is stable overall. Handsome Detailed Vintage Folk Art Wood Owl Decoy Nicely Carved and Painted

This guy has personality. He is beautifully carved and the detail in the painting of his feathers/body is amazing. Has glass eyes and measures about 17.5″ Long alone and just under 20″ on his stand. I believe his ears are leather and part of one ear is broken off as shown in photos. There is something between his nose and his eye that looks like another owl scratched him! Antique Early American Folk Art Portrait handsome Man Empire Picture Frame 1840

This nicely preserved historic oil on canvas portrait of a handsome, 20-something man check out the eyebrows! With pleasant, subtle smiling facial expression and tousled hair with near spit curls is housed in its original mahogany on pine frame retaining original varnish and measures 30 1/4″ x 26 1/8″ overall; 26″ x 22″ actual. The subject is depicted with his arm casually draped over the back of an empire side chair and engaging the viewer with the frankness and piercing dark brown eyes. The work has stable paint with some very small pinpoint spots of loss in the background and the surface of the painting is fairly dirty with no obvious inpaint. It has an early 20th century re-lining and is mounted to its original stretchers. I added the modern steel clips as the bent nails previously employed were loose and a potential threat to the canvas. It comes from a Massachusetts family collection and the identity of the sitter is unknown. The entire piece measures 32 1/2 x 39 in. Canvas only measures 27 1/4 x 33 1/4 in. It appears to be signed with the initial J at the bottom right. The painting is in good as is vintage condition with a old professional repair at the center , only seen from the reverse. It also has mild in-painting and crazing/craquelure throughout the piece. The painting itself appears to be 1840-50s item period and the frame is probably 1920-30s. Please notice the faint outline of a steamboat at the side right middle, the man posing with his hand on a few books. Signifying he was a learned man. The honest , simple manner in which he was painted displays a delightful example of Americana folk art. Please enlarge all pictures to judge condition to your own standards.
