Antique paint decorated folk art brides box in deep green with flowers and foliage in green, red, orange, yellow, white, blue and many shades of these. It is typical of Scandinavian boxes with oval lapped construction carved post on the ends that hold the lid tight and used by finger pressure to. Lid is painted and has a bentwood handle with split tails on each end to line up with carved posts. Lid is 9 3/4 inches by 4 3/4 inches wide and is beveled edged. Inscription inside says Miss Gracie Elizabeth and l think Erie. If so possibly made in Pennsylvania by Scandinavian immigrants. Lid looks lit white pine sides and bottom are a tighter grained pine. Perhaps made in the old way using similar woods and new world wood on combination. A common practice in Pa and all of America. Very nice box in very fine original paint wonderful polychrome color. Old split on lid is glued and very sound. All my items are fresh picked from local estates and small sales. Hand Painted Barrel Stave. 1 deep Long oak stave hand painted on the front with a nautical whaling scene. Wired and ready to hang, artist signed E. Dean, in bottom right hand corner. Attributed to turn of the century folk artist Elizabeth Dean, not dated. Dean mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, died in June of 2011, at the age of 100. She developed her unique style of Folk Art from her studio in Randolph, MA, and later in North Wakefield, New Hampshire. She painted for a number of galleries, and for special clients late into her 90’s.
