Crawford (middle initial looks like “G”, could be another letter). Came from an estate in the Philadelphia area. Gouache and/or watercolor, possibly mixed media: on board. Approx 15″ X 21″ (including frame). Beautiful period, wood frame. Most likely mid century. Has aspects of modernism with a special folk art quality. I believe this artist is probably African American. I researched the address in Philadelphia where the artist lived (see photos). My friend, who is a well regarded art dealer also feels the artist is likely African American. Wonderful design element with the sun shining through the middle of the mountain range. Very beautiful, deep colors. Excellent composition, with a unique arrangement of the house, the cows and the layering of the field. Highly original work of art. I opened it to take better photos. See photo # 6, which reveals the full painting without the mat. I think with restoration, the mat lines for framing can easily be restored. I don’t think it is stain from the mat, but the lines that the framer drew when placing the mat. It does work as is, with the mat as seen in the other photos, though I rather like the larger, more complete painting when the mat is removed. Otherwise, very fine condition for it’s age. Up for sale is a rare antique 19th century original Johannes Olsen Folk Art oil painting. It can possibly even be a bit earlier. It depicts a mother and father standing by their two children infant of a small red brick school. There is a raised flag in the foreground and is signed by Olsen on the bottom right. The painting is set in a stunning handmade wooden frame that is painted and engraved to look like old brick. It measures 22 3/4 inches by 17 1/4 inches framed. It does have some ware, crackling, and some paint loss as seen in last photo. The canvas also needs to be re-stretched as it is a bit wavy. A substantial and well rendered oil portrait painting of an American woman, signed illegibly and dated 1850. I was told the sitter was a wealthy Southern woman from the Antebellum period, but I dont know how to verify this. Overall in good condition and presents nicely. It has been restored in the past: cleaned, relined, re-varnished, housed in a contemporary frame. There are scattered spots of in painting mainly to fave and hands, as well as scattered areas of small paint loss/wear. 43.75″ x 35.5″ framed.
