Done in 1990 signed & dated lower left. This measures 30″ X 40″ sight and with heavy wooden frame 35″ X 45″. Painting in excellent vintage condition. Vintage frame has some nicks from age on it mainly to the blue area which could be touched up or left the way it is. This painting was featured in the 1993 Art Americana calendar and on a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle by Bits & Pieces. A chance to own a great painting at a bargain price. 1944 Haiti is a founding member of the art movement called “Saint Soleil” along with other well known artists like Prospere Pierre Louis, Louisiane St. Fleurant and Dieuseul Paul. He is featured in many books including. Where Art is Joy: Haitian Art: The First Forty Years by Seldon Rodman. He has exhibited around the world and his work is well regarded by collectors. Painting condition: Excellent – Approximate size 30″ X 40″ inches (ships rolled). À la suite de son voyage en 1975 en Haïti, qui sera aussi son dernier, André Malraux décide de consacrer un chapitre entier de son livre L’intemporel – la Métamorphose des Dieux édité chez Gallimard en 1976 au mouvement Saint Soleil. Évidemment l’ouvrage contribue de manière foudroyante à la reconnaissance mondiale de ces artistes perdus au milieu d’Haïti. Malraux illustre une pleine page de son livre avec une uvre de Levoy Exil et ose même écrire page 330 Picasso voulait que ses tableaux du Palais des Papes atteignissent la liberté qu’atteint celui de Levoy Exil parce que le peintre haïtien ignore la peinture des autres. Mais ces tableaux d’Avignon sont manifestement des uvres professionnelles du XXe siècle postérieures au cubisme, et dont la frénésie d’échapper à l’art appartient à celui-ci, alors que le peintre haïtien ne tente pas d’échapper à un englobant qu’il ignore. Malraux est impressionné par la force et la qualité des uvres de Saint-Soleil qu’il trouve très proche de l’art brut.
