This 15 tall (11 ¼ without base) middle to late 1700s carved and painted wood saint boasts wonderfully grungy, untouched surface with soot accretions and crazing from YEARS near candles. He is missing his hands (carved separately) and glass eyes. Near the base, he is a bit soft from old (inactive) insect damage and he is loose on his exceptional polychrome carved wood plinth/pedestal. He needs to be handled gently, and has terrific presence. This baroque or rococo style figure of the late 1700s measures 13 3/8 tall on his 4 x 6 x 6 ½ pedestal and depicts a male saint holding a basket of food and raising his hand in blessing. The surface is very old (early to middle 1800s) and appears to be untouched with elaborate gilt damascene designs on the saints robe. The paint on his hand and face is chipped. Its surface is stable and there are no obvious repairs. I think the eyes may be a more recent re-paint. The item “Antique Carved Wood Saint Statue 18th c. Size: 20 3/4 ” x 14 1/2 ” x 3/4. Condition: As high-definition photographed. Corner damage, fading, wormy, etc… Definitely shows its age. Displays well, in my opinion. Note about age – It is possible that the panel dates to the early 1800s, however, my educated opinion is that it dates to much earlier. A number of antique dealers have opined that the panel may even date to the 17th century. Any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for looking at this listing… And please take a peek at my antique quartersawn oak hall tree (which the panel is resting on) listing. Up for sale here is a very rare, unframed, circa late 1700s or earlier, what could be described as an embroidery for a couple getting engaged or for someone of a romantic interest. You can see two doves with hearts in their mouths flying over the heads of the couple in the work almost like cupid. It is quite a departure from your typical religious or historical pieces of the period. The work is hand stitched silk on thin silk fabric that has a few hand painted elements including the faces and hands of the figures and the miniature grouping of lambs in the lower left corner. The lambs themselves are interesting as there are many in the group and very tiny while the figures are quite large in comparison. The stitching has then been secured to thin gold colored metal along the edges. The entire piece has then been hand sewn onto an extremely old piece of bluish grey colored paper. At one time this paper appears to have been mounted to something else using red wax, as you can see from the pictures of the back of the piece. The work itself measures 8 1/4 inches high by 11 1/8 inches across. There is no indication from what we can see of a maker’s name , an artist or who the couple is that is in the picture. We think that this piece could be French in origin though we found this piece glued inside the back of the spine of an old mid to late 19th Century English inlaid notebook which just had blank pages in it. The condition of the work is good to very good overall. Since the piece was probably sealed up for at least the last 150 years in the back of the book no light, air or bugs have gotten to it. The fabric is nice and fresh and has good colors probably just as good as when it was made. The only defects we can see are a 1/16th of an inch diameter spot of fabric missing in the lower right corner. The old ribbon has come off the edges but we still have it so if you want to restore it , it will be original. The thin fabric holding the piece down to the piece of paper is also undone along the top edge but the other three edges are secure. We are guessing the age to this piece to probably be around the 1770s or so. As you can see in the embroidery the man still has a purse and from our research on men and purses , is that most men did not carry them anymore by the year 1800 so even if this piece is as late at the 1770s or 1790s it would have been a late period for a man having a purse. While we have seen many pieces from this era over the years, we have not seen one with the subject matter or detail as this work has. If you collect these old rare textiles, this would make a great addition to your collection. This is probably the first time this work has been seen in a long long time. Antique 18th Century Thomas Philips Folk Art Painting 1760 American Revolution
Here is an antique 18th century watercolor painting / drawing on handlaid paper, dated 1760, signed by Thomas Philips. The framed folk art piece depicts a woman in colonial dress and a uniformed gentleman soldier? With a short lyric / poem which states… Ppy he whose inclination, Warms but with a gentle heat, Never flies up to a passion, Loves a torment if too great. This painting has a hand tinted mat and was professionally framed in a vintage black and gold painted wood frame (some paint loss to frame). The mostly intact paper on the back of the frame still bears the stamp of the framer – Jacob Hefner, Metz Bldg, Grand Rapids, Mich. I have not removed the painting from the frame, and it is in the same condition as I originally found it. Dimensions of frame: nearly 13½” by 11½” (34.1 cm by 29 cm). Dimensions of visible painting image (mat opening): nearly 8¼” by 6¼” (20.8 cm by 15.7 cm). There is some faint wrinkling and some small pin holes in the paper (examples of these shown in close-up in photo #8), but there are no visible rips or tears. There are some dark spots and general discoloration to the paper and the ink (possibly iron gall ink), used for the border and the inscription has bled a bit over the past 250+ years. I have not been able to find the background story behind this painting, but from the date and the man in what appears to be a British uniform, I’m guessing it has something to do with a romantic relationship during the War of The American Revolution or maybe the Seven Years War. Please visit my other auctions as I will be listing more great items while we continue to go through our years of inherited and accumulated treasures. Any coins, rulers, or scales that may be shown in any photos are not included in the listing and are shown for reference only.
