Rare 19th C Antique Folk Art Carved Horse Handheld Stick Toy Original Paint AAFA. Offered today is a Rare and possibly Unique Carved and Painted Childs. Hand-held Horse stick toy. Carved and painted wood, appears to be pine. Guaranteed antique and not a reproduction. The wonderful form of a horse’s body with wonderful facial details. And real hair for the mane. Age appropriate wear throughout for a child’s toy of this age. The folk art qualities of this example are outstanding and. I, for one, can envision a Prior-Hamblin portrait of a child. Holding this, his/her favorite horse stick toy. Condition is as expected… Wear and scuffs to paint, hairline crack to the neck, original horsehair is thinning and loose, repair and replacement to some of the leather. All/any repairs/replacements are old, done a long time ago. Wonderful carved details to the horse’s head, signs of a masterful carver. Unique and possibly one of a kind! Size: 7-1/2″ long x 2″ thick x 4-1/2 high (figure dimensions). Overall length with handle is 16-1/2. Circa about 1920’s and retaining its original paint in black and white. A great primitive item with aquatic significance. Wood tends to get stress fractures on support systems and where wide board construction is used. 85% of 18th Century veneers have had some restoration during their life. Pine secondary woods might fracture, making overlays and veneers having the same fracture lines. Old finishes might alligator, fade, fisheye or darken, depending on where the pieces were placed. All of these are desired by a true collector and gives it personality. Do not expect these early pieces to be like new. These pieces age gracefully just as we do, giving them unique personality. We do our best to describe and photograph all items thoroughly, but handle a quantity of pieces every day and might miss something. Up for sale is an amazing, very large early American Folk Art Painting in the style of Joseph Whiting Stock. This painting is of 3 children and their dog. This massive painting measures approximately 42.5″ x 49″ framed and 34″ x 40.5″ unframed. Has great colors, loads of charm and displays beautifully. Overall very good condition but could probably use a professional cleaning and some touch ups. There are areas that are a bit blotchy and some areas where tiny flakes of paint have come off. AN EXTREMELY FINE AND EARLY 19TH CENTURY FOLK ART DECORATED DOCUMENT BOX IN WONDERFUL RED, ORANGE, WHITE, BLACK AND BLUE DECORATION OVER THE ORIGINAL WINDSOR GREEN BASE COAT. EXTRAORDINARY EARLY PAINT DECORATIONS. THIS BOX HAS A FLAT TOP AND IS MADE OF EARLY NAILED CONSTRUCTION. IT STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL IRON HINGES. THE TOP HAS THE USUAL PAINT WEAR FROM MUCH USE BUT THE REST IS IN EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION, (see photos). IT HAS A VERY RARE FOLK ART INVERTED HEART DECORATION THROUGHOUT. THE PAINT IS WELL OXIDIZED but STILL BRIGHT. This BOX is “Untouched”. THIS BOX IS MUCH, MUCH BETTER IN PERSON. THE PAINT IS SPECTACULAR. The box is 14 1/2″ wide, 8″ deep and 8 1/4 tall. It exhibits only the typical wear and tear you would see from 200 years of use as I have shown in the photos. A truly great find especially in such fine condition and surface, usually these are in poor shape and have been stripped of all their paint and patina. Minor paint loss as seen. 1856 antique folk art wooden wedding box in superb original “untouched” dry and grungy oxblood red and black paint. Fresh to the market – a well preserved mid 19th century folk art box. Sadly, we are at a point where we need to part with some of her antiques. Boxes such as this were typically made for a couple as a wedding present. It is rare to find such an old box in this condition, especially signed and dated. A truly beautiful and highly sought after example of a 19th century heirloom. After over a century and a half it stills retains its original hand forged hardware and untouched dry painted surface with an exceptional patina. The date and four initials are painted on the front of the box in creamy yellow. I think the initials are L. There is writing in lead on the inside of the lid which is difficult to make out. However, it looks like an inscription to the original recipients and a signature, likely of the maker. It appears to be original to the box. This adds beautifully to the history of this fabulous old piece. Perhaps someone with better eyes than mine can decipher it. The finish is dry, the corners are dovetailed, hand scraping in several areas is evident, the nails, hinges, latch for hooking/locking and handle are primitive and hand forged. A few nails do appear to have been added sometime around the turn of the century. The rose head nails that secure the hinges are some of the largest and nicest you will find, nearly the size of a dime. Approximately 12 1/2 inches long by 7 1/8 inches deep by 7 1/2 inches high. It appears to be constructed of native poplar and pine and is heavy for its size weighing 4 pounds, 11 ounces. There are three small spots of brighter red paint that splattered onto the box at some point in its long history. Typical wear, as well as light paint and surface losses associated with the age of the box are present and are expected of an antique that is 161 years old. It looks like the bottom was originally one piece of wood that cracked down the center with age. A very solid and sturdy box in what we consider to be very good overall condition for its age. This is a museum quality small antique chest. I try to describe all of our items as accurately as possible.
