Antique 19th century, c1860s, original oil painting of an eye catching folk art townscape at dusk. Depicts a riverside mill town complete with buildings, Windmill and old stone bridge arching over a gently cascading waterfall. Presumably a New England scene. Medium is oil on canvas done in a folk art style. Framed in its original lemon gold gesso and wood frame and ready to hang. Very intriguing and worthy of further research. Provenance comes from a Keene, New Hampshire area estate. In Good overall condition. Exhibits gentle cracking and soiling. No holes, rips, tears or indents. Frame shows gentle chipping and loss to the gesso at the corners. Eye catching and appealing. Measures 15 1/4″ x 12 1/4″ and 19 1/4″ x 16 1/4″ with the frame. All reasonable offers considered. Mid 19th Century Oil – The Piper And His Apprentice. A fine example of naive English school painting from the mid 19th Century. The scene shows an elderly man playing bagpipes as a young boy holds up a hat, signalling for coins to be thrown in. The painting is unsigned and presented in a 29th Century gilt effect frame with oversize scrolling foliate molding. The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The frame is in fine condition. Size: 20 x 16cm (7.9″ x 6.3″). Includes a Certificate of Authenticity. This is an antique folk art painting of a handsome gentleman wearing a gold Masonic pin on his shirt. Horace Bunday (1814-83) is a well listed artist, best known for his portraits of prominent Americans, whose paintings regularly sell for thousands of dollars. Signed and dated on reverse “H Bundy / Painter / 55″, and stamped “RL & G DRAKE / ARTISTS DEPOT / TROY NY”. The portrait is encircled in a faux oval inner frame. The painting measures approximately 30″ x 25″. Condition: Very good overall condition, scattered minor losses along the edges, several light scratches to upper left (please see photos) and scattered areas of inpainting to clothing and background.
