Biography from New Jersey Gallery. Antonio Romano was born in Italy in 1953. His teachers in Italy included Luigi Fali, a student of Pietra Annagoni (portrait painter of Queen Elizabeth). He attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and worked under James Moriarty. Romano has developed a distinctive style combining modernism and folk art, which he calls “e-scribble”. It is a style with elements of surrealism and one he developed within the last few years, well after first visiting the USA in 1966 with several trips every other year or so back to Italy before remaining here. E-scribble derived from childhood memories and symbols from Central Italy. The inspiration came from the exposure to design features of wool tapestries made on family looms, which wove their influence into his’mindscape’ as an almost metaphysical, melancholy backdrop to his art. The influence of Giorgio De Chirico, the Italian Futurists , and Paul Delvaux and Rene Magritte is acknowledged, but Romano has assimilated their influence and gone his own way with the goal of creating provocative paintings carefully and skillfully conceived, designed and executed. One of his paintings, entitled Tesla , for the great scientist and electrical engineer, demonstrates elements of a prototypical Antonio Romano painting— balance and subject matter of timelessness. For some viewers, it is difficult to determine if a work was done a week ago or one-hundred years ago. Romano often uses found/used material on which to paint, using old paper or cardboard as part of the history of the painting. His frames are often used and old, and he considers them to be an integral part of the artwork. He often writes a few words, a saying of his own, poetry if you will, to add to the painting’s meaning and/or mystery. The delicate looping e is a design backdrop intended to add dimension and a temporal and enigmatic quality. There are objects that may be interpreted in different ways, and the viewer, of course, ultimately decides on their meanings and the satisfaction derived from viewing the artwork. Romano has taught fresco painting, and one of his fresco panels was bought by art dealer, Leo Castelli. The New Yorker magazine in 1989 featured him and his fresco work in an article. The artist Albert Pels was a friend and collector of his work. He has done frescoes for the St Mary’s Cathedral in Albany and Our Lady of Pompeii in Greenwich Village. Keywords and Quick Facts for.
