Here is a wonderful primitive 19th Century watercolor of a mother and her child from Maine 1830. As you can see there is plenty of color and detail in the watercolor. There is a beautiful decorated carpet at their feet. It is in its original grain painted frame. The backing was removed and updated to an acid free black mat and archival corners. The size of the watercolor is 9 X 10 1/2. ” The frame is 12 3/4″ 14 5/8. Provenance is from the Lynn Dingus Collection in Ohio. That is her label on the back of the watercolor. Folk art hall tree / painted wood, repurposed materials / Maine / c. Whimsical antique painted folk art hall tree in green and gold, Maine, c. The piece is composed of a back board cut from a single plank in an eccentric silhouette onto which found and repurposed elements were attached to fashion a hat and coat rack. The radiating turned arms originate from a late 18th or early 19th century yarn winder or spinning wheel, as do the capped dowel hooks and turned feet. At its waist is mounted a mysterious birdhouse-like box with a indicator intended to spin, its purpose unknown perhaps a conveniently-placed penny bank if change remained in your coat pocket? The hall tree is painted a brilliant emerald green with gold stencil embellishments and borders. A fun and playful piece of folk art furniture to brighten your entryway, equally at home in traditional and modern environments. Very good antique condition. The spinning wheel arm hooks are attached at the hub with the original iron bolt and are secured by an additional screw or two and the back (as seen in the photos). The piece shows some evidence of earlier repairs. For more pleasing and peculiar objects, follow “oldasadam” on Instagram and Facebook. We offer for sale a really wonderful piece of Victorian folk art, a painting of a dog standing on a chair looking out the window in great anticipation. We’ve taken the liberty of calling it “Waiting for Her Mistress” as it so aptly describes the scene. This oil on board came from Portland, Maine, circa 1880s (see below). PAINTING SUBJECT & SCENE. We are not art experts or historians but will share our conclusions about this unsigned piece of domestic genre art. The subject is charming, colorful, expressive, and well detailed in a feminine style so likely the artist was a lady of means, a gifted amateur. Women were more likely than men not to sign their works. The curtains are lace, the walls papered with a leaf pattern, the carpeting covered with repeating flowers, the green velvet ottoman fully braided, all carefully detailed. The Victorian parlor chair features small wheels in front and an ornate crest rail with ears. On the windowsill sits a slim vase holding flowers. The dog is likely a Toy Manchester Terrier, a popular breed at the time when ears and tail were not to be cropped. Bright light better shows the dog’s tan snout. The dog is female and has a cute collar with a big red bow. THE PAINTING AND FRAME. Oil on board, with a period label on the back. Of Portand, Maine, was a popular drugstore that expanded into other provisions including artists’ supplies. The original frame is of intricately detailed plaster with shiny gold paint. It shows its age with normal cracks and occasional small pieces lacking. 23″ wide by 24-3/4″ high by 2-1/4 deep. 16-1/2″ wide by 18-1/4″ high. Weighs nearly 8 pounds unpacked. A painting that’s 130 years old will have some issues, but overall this one is in very good condition with no serious damage. There is some normal crackling and a few missing tiny flakes, and a very small section of one chair leg looks like it might have been retouched in the past. There is wear around the edges where the board touches the frame. A new frame would cover that up. The board is no longer totally flat but it’s not obvious or detracting and won’t affect reframing. It could use cleaning to brighten up the colors that have normal darkening with age. This painting has so much appeal. It tells a story — use your imagination! Please see photos for details. WITH OR WITHOUT FRAME. Please wait for an invoice before paying. Thank you for viewing. We want happy customers so please ask any questions beforehand. We give feedback when we receive feedback. PLEASE DO NOT PAY UNTIL INVOICED. Loup Garou Books & Antiques. The item “Toy Manchester Terrier OOB ca1880s, Maine, framed oil painting, dog folk art” is in sale since Wednesday, April 3, 2019. The person from whom we bought it from believed that it was one of the Porter family painter’s and may indeed be by Rufus Porter himself, however there is no signature as with many of the Porter families work. It sat in the same home in Maine for 140 years. At some time in the past, the old canvas was laid on a later board. We were also told that it may be Long Lake. It most likely has had some restoration in the past. The painting itself measures about 16″ x 22″. A nice addition to any collection of American Folk Art painting. Born in West Boxford, Massachusetts to a farm family, itinerant painter Rufus Porter has been described by folk-art historian Jean Lipman as America’s chief early mural painter and one of our outstanding native artists. A mobile one-man factory for original portraiture and interior decoration (149-150). His landscape murals earned him wide attention, and from 1824 to 1845, he completed more than 150 murals, a combination of freehand and stencils. Placed over mantles and entire walls, his murals were especially appreciated because he did natural settings of local views instead of the traditional elaborate classical or historical scenes with enhanced decoration. Because of his focus on regional scenes, he is credited as the first American Scene painter. In 1825, he published a book, “Curious Arts”, as an instruction manual for various types of artwork, and one of the book’s sections was’Landscape Painting on Walls of Rooms’. As a portraitist, he pioneered the idea of doing quick and inexpensive portraits so that common people could afford them. He made a camera obscura that enabled him to make silhouettes in less than 15 minutes. His method was to focus the silhouette of the sitter on a sheet of paper and then sketch and rapidly fill in the facial features. He also did full face and profile miniatures and portraits on ivory. Porter’s itinerant life style began when he was nine years old and his family moved to Maine. To steer him away from fiddling towards something they regarded as practical, his parents apprenticed him to his older brother, who was a shoemaker. However Porter soon tired of that and walked to Portland where he spent several years playing the violin for dances and the fife for military companies. Other jobs included house and sign painter, painter of gunboats and drummer and teacher of drumming. In 1814, he joined the Portland Light Infantry, and then he taught school and built grist mills before moving to New Haven, Connecticut where he ran a dancing school and began portrait painting. He married Eunice Twombly in 1815, and they had ten children. In spite of these increasing responsibilities, he traveled continuously throughout New England, the mid-Atlantic states and the South, going into Virginia. In 1849, his wife having died the previous year, he remarried and fathered six more children from this union. At this time, he added journalism to his activities and edited the “New York Mechanic, ” “American Mechanic, ” and Scientific American. Described as having the outstanding trait of “total independence of the more conventional ideas and fashions of his day” (152), he also was also notable as an inventor. He created devlices that improved locomotion and even drew plans for automobiles, elevated trains, and flying ships, the largest model being 20-feet long. In 1849, timed for the California Gold Rush, he published a book titled Aerial Navigation, the Practicability of Traveling Pleasantly and Safely from New York to California in Three Days. ” Although he never flew, he was the “first man in the world to plan and try out the possibilities of a power-driven passenger plane. Rufus Porter, one of the more diverse and fiercely independent personalities in the world of American art, died at age 92 in New Haven, Connecticut. Apparently, even at that advanced age, he was still itinerant as shortly before his death at the home of a son, he was in Bristol, Connecticut.
