Vintage 1930s Painted Leather Folk Art Circus Elephant Harness Headdress

Marvelous surface, vibrant medallion in red with green letter O and screaming yellow paint remnants on straps. Diamond centered on the animals head (O likely referring to the circus name), the other straps held together by an absent lash. Medallion measures 12 H x 9 W, 30 straps and 36 at the longest. Supple and stable, stitching has let go a few places (see detail photos). Difficult to photograph, please see photos and ask questions. Scarce – graphic – piece, thanks much for looking. REDUCED! Vintage 1977 FOLK ART Carved & Painted WHIRLIGIG/Wood Chopper/ALVIN HALL

This is a whimsical whirligig made & signed by ALVIN L. I used to live for a time in the St. Louis area and came upon Mr. Hall and his yard of whirligigs with a FOR SALE sign on his fence. He and his wife were retired and moving to Florida and he could not take his hobby whirligigs. This one is “Man Chopping Wood” and was made in 1977 and is typical of his personal style. The length of this whirligig is 36″ and the wooden propellers are 15&1/2″ across. The wood painted tail of the whirligig measures 12″ x 8″. The man is nicely carved and is 8 from his boots to the top of his hat. Hall showed me his little backyard workshop shed where he worked with simple hand tools to make his wind machines. NOTICE how when the wind moves the propeller (he has added thin metal and curved it to get more of the wind), it is attached to a metal shaft which then is bent so it goes in a rotation and Mr. Hall designed the chopper so that his upper body pivots up and down thereby “chopping his wood with his ax”. This American folk art whirligig is in mild weathered condition but that is part of the charm. It works perfectly and has no issues. I will create packaging that will be able to protect the piece during transport. The item “REDUCED! Vintage 1966 Joan Kearns’LINCOLN PARK ZOO’ Chicago FOLK ART Naive Oil Painting

This is just a great original piece. I acquired a small collection of paintings by Joan Kearns. Ms Kearns was not a listed artist but rather a part time artist. I have found her obituary and it reads, Joan was a graduate, and former Board member, of Francis W. Parker, Bennington College and the Harvard Business School. Joan was the owner/CEO of a major Consulting firm, an active member of the Harvard Club, the Art Institute of Chicago and an avid supporter of the Lincoln Park Zoo. I think this makes sense as to why 2 of her paintings are wonderful landmarks of Chicago including the Lincoln Park Zoo, and a view of the city from Clark Street. This is really a wonderful painting. Done in a classic mid 20th Century style of folk art. A wonderful large oil on canvas measuring 24 x 34 inches. Signed and dated lower right. An outstanding image of the entrance to the zoo on a beautiful summer day with hundreds of people among the grounds. The wonderful Landmark Cafe pavillion stands right center with the red roofs. Really just a wonderful painting. It is in perfect as painted condition as it seems as though it has been in a frame with glass since it was painted. Actually, the back of the frame has an original Newcomb Macklin frame sticker. Just a wonderful presentation of this outstanding mid century folk art painting. Frame measures 25 1/2 x 35 1/4 inches.
