Description: Up for sale is this very interesting American oil on canvas painting. Dating circa 1880 the frame is period and was manufactured in Philadelphia. Note paper label still attached. Depicts a mother and child walking through the snow to reach a home in the distance. The woman is carring a bundle of kindling on her back. Two lights shine from the home in the distance leading the way. Painting is unsigned as is often the case with folk art. Interesting to think that this scene would have been typical for the time: one’s ability to stay warm through the winter was directly dependant on your ability to bring in enough wood to keep from freezing. Original framed oil painting by Kowalski on canvas of winter village theme. The artist has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner “Kowalski”. The painting measures approx. 19.5″ by 23.5″ with the frame 27 by 31. Painting is in good condition with minor scratches on the upper left corner side of painting. The deep carved wood frame with linen matting is in good condition as well. Please take a good look at the photos as they constitute the remainder of our description. The artist was born in Sopron in Hungary in 1926. He was a student of the Academy of Budapest andduring the uprising in 1956 against Communism he escaped from Hungary to Vienna. He has become internationally known for his (typically East European style) “Naive” paintings depicting Village life in the four seasons in glorious colour. Children especially like his works as each one tells a story. He has exhibited in many Galleries throughout Europe, particularly in Munich, Vienna, Tokyo, and Harrods in London.
