ORIGINAL ACRYLIC PAINTING ON CANVAS BY THE LATE MASTER LOUISIANE ST FLEURANT B. SHE WAS ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE FAMOUS ART MOVEMENT CALLED SAINT SOLEIL AND ALSO MOTHER OF FAMOUS ARTIST THE LATE STIVENSON MAGLOIRE. LOUISIANE PASSED AWAY IN 2005. WORK SIZE 30″ X 20″ MORE FROM WIKIPEDIA: Louisiane Saint Fleurant (19242005) was a Haitian female artist and painter. She was a founder of the peasant Saint Soleil art movement. Saint Fleurant’s paintings often depict primitive maternal scenes of females, children, trees, wildlife, and Haitian Vodou Loas. Her folk painting style is often colorful and vibrant and expresses a distinct female perspective on the Saint Soleil movement and Haitian Vodou art. Louisiane Saint Fleurant was born on September 11, 1924, in Petit-Trou-de-Nippes, Haiti. Along with Prospere Pierre-Louis, Dieuseul Paul, Denis Smith, and Levoy Exil she formed the renowned Cinq Soleil (Five Suns) art movement. The Five Suns group formed out of the Saint Soleil movement, of which Louisiane was the only female artist. She is affectionately called the godmother of the art movement. She was not formally trained in art and began painting only in her late 40s. Louisiane was originally introduced to the Saint Soleil art community as a peasant cook and after receiving some direction from Jean-Claude Garoute, she started her practice in painting and sculpture. [1] Louisiane is the mother of five children including the renowned artist Stevenson Magloire. She painted and sculpted for 30 years until the age of 80 when poor vision precluded her ability to continue in 2002. Saint Fleurant died in her home on June 1, 2005. A second tragedy hit her family when the cemetery where she was buried was bulldozed following the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Her work has been exhibited in Asia, Europe, and the United States[3] and has recently been part of fundraising, relief, and awareness efforts following the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Louisiane Saint Fleurant’s folk paintings are well regarded by collectors for their unique manifestations of motherhood and her female perspective on Haitian and Vodou folk art. This wonderful American folk art half portrait of a lady dates to the early 19th century, circa 1830. The sitter is wearing traditional circa 1830 dress; we particularly like the pink, white and red neck ribbon. Early American folk artists would often use the same props in their paintings; in this painting the lady is sat on a dark wood chair with red cushioning and with one arm crossed horizontally. Beside her is a side table with a small porcelain globular vase filled with flowers. The painting is unsigned and housed in its attractive unglazed original frame. We have not opened this painting. Measuring: Frame 9 1/8 (23 cm) by 11 2/8 (28.5 cm). Aperture 5.5 (14 cm) by 7.75 (19.5 cm). Condition: This original oil painting is in good condition for its vast age with some evidence of old restoration. There is a small surface graze at the top of the sitters head. Next to this graze is a thumb size area of old restoration. There are a couple of minor surface scratches to the table cloth area. Above the table is an area of diagonal darkening to the painted surface. There is a small approximately 0.5 crack to the top layer of the board in the bottom right corner, this we believe is an area of previous restoration to her hand. The bottom edge of the gilt slip has a shallow 2 surface chip which has at some point in the past been touched up in gold. The rosewood veneer frame is in good, sound condition. 1944 Haiti is a founding member of the art movement called “Saint Soleil” along with other well known artists like Prospere Pierre Louis, Louisiane St. Fleurant and Dieuseul Paul. He is featured in many books including. Where Art is Joy: Haitian Art: The First Forty Years by Seldon Rodman. He has exhibited around the world and his work is well regarded by collectors. Painting condition: Very Good – Approximate size 48″ X 36″ inches (ships rolled). Original Black Americana Folk Art Naive Painting. Woman Dreaming On Picket Fence
For sale is an outstanding early 20th century black Americana naïve folk art style oil painting. From a Maryland Private estate. One “gets” this painting almost immediately when viewing it. The woman stands against the country picket fence looking up towards the sky while wearing her Sunday best black and white checkered dress. Her mind wondering off, dreaming of a better life. Perhaps she is thinking about being an actress or a singer in a hopping jazz club somewhere in New York or Chicago. Or a dancer touring the world with a dance troupe visiting Paris and the other major European cities that she only reads about in books and newspapers. She may just be dreaming of a little simpler life not consumed with the daily rugged chores of living on a rural farm which consists of work from sun up until sundown. You can tell that while content with her simple life on a southern farm she hopes and dreams for so much more for herself. In her eyes you can see this dream may never come to be. But she dreams the dream. On the porch either a husband or one of her children leisurely strums a tune on the banjo. Two ducks seem to enjoy her company by the picket fence in the foreground. This painting is signed in the lower right corner. Like many Black Americana paintings the artist cannot be found in our research. This painting is oil on hard stock paper board. It appears to be dated on the reverse either 4/3/11, or 4/23/41. We cannot tell accurately. Please see the close-up detail picture for consideration. Condition: The painting being in overall good condition for age. Some yellowing of the surface varnish but over all good for age. Some small areas of paint surface lost on the outer edges near the frame contact area. The frame having age-appropriate wear with numerous layers of built-up varnish coatings. Framed – 18 1/2″ x 14 1/2″. Painting – 15 7/8″ x 11 7/8″. The item “Original Black Americana Folk Art Naive Painting. Woman Dreaming On Picket Fence” is in sale since Friday, June 09, 2017. Lawrence Lebduska The Garden of Eden(Wildlife) Naive Religious, Folk Art
Almost every artist I post for sales is in the top 1-3% for book mentions, museums that have their work, success in their style or era, and highest prices achieved. Lebduska is an interesting artist and I think the potential for his art exploding in value is possible, especially if there is a major museum retrospection which has helped many artists’ art prices and overall reputation get boosted. I remember years ago how Edward Hopper’s art went up many echelons as did Childe Hassam and other artists. I have been saving this one for quite a while. It was painted by one of the most inspirational artists that I have ever read about. I want you to research the amazing recovery that he made from the depths of despair about fifty years ago. Check Askart to see how many books he has been written about and the museums that have his art up to the year 2000, including the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, one great museum. The museums are throughout the United States, not particularly regional like many artists. His paintings in the 1930’s are credited with motivating Abby Rockefeller to amass her folk art collection. Lawrence Lebduska’s art style has been referred to as naive religious, folk, fantasy filled, symbolic, and bold in color. His animals, found in many of his paintings may be peaceful, playful or occasionally fearful or menacing. In this Garden of Eden painting(Wildlife) do you think that is a crown of thorns? If you investigate his art on Artvalue you will see why I think that. Is there a snake in that unique tree? I like it too much but it might need a home to be displayed. His “Cause of Struggle” is the best folk painting that I have ever seen. I rambled enough, read about one of America’s most amazing artists. This painting has a good sized image of 20″x22″ and is oil on canvas and signed, “Lebduska” in the lower right. I think his art might grow on you if you see more of his paintings. Many of the Haitian paintings that I have seen remind me of his art. It is framed, I never took digitals, and is in very good condition. If you are interested you will find it. It is in a safe, bubble wrapped environment. The item “Lawrence Lebduska The Garden of Eden(Wildlife) Naive Religious, Folk Art” is in sale since Friday, June 02, 2017.
