Up for sale is an amazing, whimsical painting by American artist, Rita Hicks Davis. Davis was born in 1956. The painting is on board and surrounded by its original, hand painted frame. It is signed lower right. The image is a woman standing outside a door, holding a basket and wearing a red hat. There is a woman or child inside the home with her cat by her side. There are wonderful touches throughout–paintings on the wall, leaf patterns on the floor, mauve colored chairs, squiggle wallpaper, and a patterned ceiling and transom. This is painted in a naïve style. Size: 10″ X 14″ including frame. The first photograph has a slight glare from the light I used to take the photo. It is not in the painting. Vintage 1966 Joan Kearns’LINCOLN PARK ZOO’ Chicago FOLK ART Naive Oil Painting

This is just a great original piece. I acquired a small collection of paintings by Joan Kearns. Ms Kearns was not a listed artist but rather a part time artist. I have found her obituary and it reads, Joan was a graduate, and former Board member, of Francis W. Parker, Bennington College and the Harvard Business School. Joan was the owner/CEO of a major Consulting firm, an active member of the Harvard Club, the Art Institute of Chicago and an avid supporter of the Lincoln Park Zoo. I think this makes sense as to why 2 of her paintings are wonderful landmarks of Chicago including the Lincoln Park Zoo, and a view of the city from Clark Street. This is really a wonderful painting. Done in a classic mid 20th Century style of folk art. A wonderful large oil on canvas measuring 24 x 34 inches. Signed and dated lower right. An outstanding image of the entrance to the zoo on a beautiful summer day with hundreds of people among the grounds. The wonderful Landmark Cafe pavillion stands right center with the red roofs. Really just a wonderful painting. It is in perfect as painted condition as it seems as though it has been in a frame with glass since it was painted. Actually, the back of the frame has an original Newcomb Macklin frame sticker. Just a wonderful presentation of this outstanding mid century folk art painting. Frame measures 25 1/2 x 35 1/4 inches.
