Quebec collector, Kastel gallery. Maud Lewis Biography (1903 – 1970). Born in South Ohio, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Maud Lewis is renowned for her bright paintings of Maritime rural life. Having contracted polio, and suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Lewis left school at the age of 14 and lived a confined but happy life at home. Following the death of her parents, Lewis moved to Marshalltown, Digby County, Nova Scotia to live with her aunt. It was there that she met her future husband, Everett Lewis, a fish peddler. They married in 1938 and moved into his small cabin. Due to her small stature and her arthritis, Maud was unable to do housework. However, she helped with the household by creating cards and paintings for income. With his encouragement, Lewis began to produce more paintings. Her work grew in popularity, and buyers began to come directly to her home to acquire her paintings. Despite her lack of formal training, Lewiss depictions of rural life, animals and landscapes, drawn from her everyday experiences, had an irresistible charm and vitality. She often used oil paints straight from the tube and rarely mixed her pigments, and her colourful work expressed the essence of Maritime life. Her work gained popularity to the point that she was featured in numerous newspapers, such as the Moncton Times, the Atlantic Advocate and the Star Weekly, and she also starred in a CBC-TV Telescope program in 1965. In 1967, her work was shown at the Centennial Exhibition of Primitive Art in New Brunswick at Beaverbrook House, St. Prominent collectors of her work include R. Stanfield, the former premier of Nova Scotia and Richard Nixon, the former President of the United States. Her paintings still hang in the White House and the Legislative Building of Nova Scotia. Lewis passed away at the Digby General Hospital at the age of 67 in 1970. She has become one of Canadas most well-known and endearing folk artists. The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia has a large collection of her paintings, and installed her original house in the gallery as part of a permanent exhibition of her work. In 2016, a film was released on her life entitled Maudie. Heffel’s Top Results. Affluent house with two boys running – One is holding a rifle and the other a fishing pole while pair drives by in automobile. Kramer relocated to LA from the east coast c. 1945 and is documented to have begun exhibiting in CA in 1947. Signed on lower right by the artist. Measures 24″ by 30″. There are some condition issues. The white paint is flecking off and needs to be inpainted or restored. This is also the case with the baby blue (boys jeans – probably had the white mixed with blue). Also there are a few light moisture marks and a scuff on the chimney – Please see all photos. These paintings are extremely rare. Albert John Kramer was born in Ohio on May 7, 1908. Kramer was an interior decorator in Cleveland, Ohio in 1930. He later settled in Los Angeles became active in the local art scene. I love coming across these gems, especially when both sides are equally well rendered. I’ve been told this painting is by listed artist ANTONIO ROMANO and it certainly does look like his work. The name off to the side of the painting is Dime Cumbert II. This might have been the name of the person he depicted in the painting. I don’t see another name/signature. Antonio Romano is known for using recycled items to paint on, and in this case, he used the back of a really nice landscape, in its original frame. The paintings really speak for themselves… Measuring approximately 24.5″ x 19.5″ approx. 20″ x 15″ without frame. The landscape oil painting is not signed. A little chippy around the edges… Frame lines, but is doesn’t detract from the painting. In some cases, photos are enlarged to show detail. Please see photos for reference. A great addition to any collection. Mailing is done ONCE per week and day varies depending on orders. Thank you in advance. Please be sure to check back for additional historical and antique items as Ill be adding items throughout the week. Please note that I take pride in the historical items offered and do NOT engage in the sale of reproductions! Description ——- Wonderful and Rare, signed , SALVADOR CORONA folk art box painted box with his usual joyous landscape of colorful, active people in early 19th century dress, along with exotic birds, horses, assorted animals (bulls, donkeys, deer, etc), flowers/trees and Maximillion era Mexico architecture. Notice the playful central story of this box – a pair of bulls have escaped and are being chased by a man on horseback who is trying to lasso them. Meanwhile the bulls have chased a man up a tree, as other. Villagers run for their lives. Box is solid wood with a domed lid, split wire hinges, and a divided interior. Box is painted in oil-based pigments on a cream colored ground. Because of the (partial) paper sticker inside, this work can be dated pre-1950 (when Corona emigrated from Mexico to live in Tucson, Arizona). Corona is beloved for the murals he painted on buildings and interior walls throughout Tucson. He is a listed artist, famous in Mexico and the USA, and in 2010, the University of Arizona / Arizona State Museum held a solo exhibit devoted to his work. If you do a google search the phrase. Salvador Corona: Matador to Muralist Exhibit, there is an excellent, 2010, YouTube (less than 4 minute) video about him and this exhibit. This is an original Salvador Corona work. There were many imitators of Corona’s style of painting, but since this is a signed work, there is no doubt. (18951990) was a Mexican-American bullfighter and artist who created an iconic folk-art style of figure and pastoral painting on everyday objects. The style is characterized by colorful Mexican scenes on a white background. The style was emulated and copied becoming a ubiquitous to the southwest and broader towns tourist trade in the 1960s. Salvador Corona was born on his family’s ranch Hacienda Mideras in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Coronas family moved to Mexico City in 1903 when he was 8. He attended the New English College in Mexico and then crossed into a career in bull fighting, entering the ring for the first time in 1913. In 1919 in Guadalajara he was gored and turned to painting. He was given his first painting lessons by fellow bullfighter Jose Jimenez. His traditional self-developed folk art style images depicted pastoral colorful scenes of Maximilian era Mexico. Painted on white backgrounds. His work can be divided into three categories: a vice-regal era with European and Creole noblemen mixed with Indians; stylized landscapes of Patscuaro, Acapulco or the Canal of Santa Anita; and his iconographic Mexican Virgins painted in tones of blue, purple, and gold often encrusted with mother of pearl. Corona moved to Tucson in 1950. His studio and residence was located at 1701 East Speedway Boulevard, and then 902 North 4th Avenue overlooking Catalina Park. Tuscon, AZ and in Josiah Joesler designed Broadway Village. His work was owned by U. Approximately, 10″ x 3.5″ x 2.75. Shown with a pear, for scale. Mark — signed ” Corona ” inside lid, in paint. Biography from New Jersey Gallery. Antonio Romano was born in Italy in 1953. His teachers in Italy included Luigi Fali, a student of Pietra Annagoni (portrait painter of Queen Elizabeth). He attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and worked under James Moriarty. Romano has developed a distinctive style combining modernism and folk art, which he calls “e-scribble”. It is a style with elements of surrealism and one he developed within the last few years, well after first visiting the USA in 1966 with several trips every other year or so back to Italy before remaining here. E-scribble derived from childhood memories and symbols from Central Italy. The inspiration came from the exposure to design features of wool tapestries made on family looms, which wove their influence into his’mindscape’ as an almost metaphysical, melancholy backdrop to his art. The influence of Giorgio De Chirico, the Italian Futurists , and Paul Delvaux and Rene Magritte is acknowledged, but Romano has assimilated their influence and gone his own way with the goal of creating provocative paintings carefully and skillfully conceived, designed and executed. One of his paintings, entitled Tesla , for the great scientist and electrical engineer, demonstrates elements of a prototypical Antonio Romano painting— balance and subject matter of timelessness. For some viewers, it is difficult to determine if a work was done a week ago or one-hundred years ago. Romano often uses found/used material on which to paint, using old paper or cardboard as part of the history of the painting. His frames are often used and old, and he considers them to be an integral part of the artwork. He often writes a few words, a saying of his own, poetry if you will, to add to the painting’s meaning and/or mystery. The delicate looping e is a design backdrop intended to add dimension and a temporal and enigmatic quality. There are objects that may be interpreted in different ways, and the viewer, of course, ultimately decides on their meanings and the satisfaction derived from viewing the artwork. Romano has taught fresco painting, and one of his fresco panels was bought by art dealer, Leo Castelli. The New Yorker magazine in 1989 featured him and his fresco work in an article. The artist Albert Pels was a friend and collector of his work. He has done frescoes for the St Mary’s Cathedral in Albany and Our Lady of Pompeii in Greenwich Village. Keywords and Quick Facts for.
