That dealer wanted the picture real bad and made him a huge offer. Well 34 years later. I have decided to share his work with the world. It features the little man that is excited and Mose said he was like a butterfly getting some love nectar from the Moose Lady The drops are the “love ” nectar. What a conversation piece! This was Mose being himself, he loved life and was always fun to visit him at his bedside where he created and painted. His work sometimes walked on the wild side. But always was true to his life and fun loving self. FANTASTIC 19th c AMERICAN FOLK ART PORTRAIT OF A BEAUTIFUL YOUNG LADY

This is an ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC 19th c AMERICAN FOLK ART PORTRAIT of a BEAUTIFUL YOUNG LADY! It is a WONDERFUL, LARGE, LIFE-SIZE portrait of a young woman in mourning. She is dressed in black. She wears black gloves, and a ANCHOR PIN in the middle of her white bow. She wears a wedding ring, and holds two white roses. The piece is in EXCELLENT CONDITION. It has been RE-LINED for many years of TROUBLE FREE enjoyment. There is in-painting as seen in the photo taken under black light, but is appears the in-painting just added some shading and did not change the features at all. On the back of what appears to be the ORIGINAL STRETCHER, is carved, W M Prior. The frame is a later frame and not original. What makes this piece really special is the attractiveness of the lady. Often times folk art portraits are not of very attractive people. You don’t have that with THIS PIECE! This piece would DEFINATELY make a statement in any room it was located in! It’s a CLASSIC AMERICAN PIECE and if by Prior would be a VERY IMPORTANT PIECE AS WELL! I have included in the last picture a collage of other William Matthew Prior portraits to compare this piece to. Detail in the work is excellent as can be seen in the photos. The paper has a Hubard Gallery mark in the lower left and appears to be the original frame. The frame measures 13.5 x 10″ with the sight of the image measuring about 10.4 x 6.75″. There is some discoloring in the top corners and the front glass is missing. A great early portrait from a well listed artist. In addition, please ask all questions at least 12 hours prior to a lot closing.
