Pre-owned condition with slight wear on the back side, but the painted side remains vibrant and intact. Light wear to the corners of the masonite. Crylic paint on masonite (high density fiberboard) with a clear lacquer. An original Mexican Folk Art painting of a religious figure by Mexican Folk artist Jesus Lorenzo. This piece is signed in black to the lower left. It is unframed and awaits your choice of presentation. Live and work in the remote craft village of Xalitla, in the state of Guerrero. They come out of the same tradition as the well-known Guerrero painters on. Lucas started out painting scenes, mostly of the landscape and village life of Guerrero, on amate paper. But 58 years ago he tried painting on the more durable material of masonite board. He also began to paint larger naive figures of saints, devils, angels, religious figures and traditional. They have added new subjects out of history and popular culture, such as masked. For dia de los muertos, images from the. Game and, of course, Frida Kahlo. For many years the Lorenzo family have operated a booth to sell their works in Mexico City. Recently Lucas’ grandson Fernando has exhibited their work at art fairs in Austin and San Antonio, Texas, as well as the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 2016 the Mexican Secretaria de Cultura published a full-color book illustrated with their paintings. Please see all photos as they are representative of the item condition and description, including measurements. We are proud to offer. Thank you for supporting our family business!

Hand-Painted Barbershop Sign from Ghana, Africa Outsider/Naive/Folk Art Vintage
Ghana, Africa Outsider/Naive/Folk Art Painted Barbershop Sign by Humble Boy, Vintage. I’ve done a lot of research on this piece, and yet I can’t really tell you definitively all that much about it. I think it’s from the 1990s–it could absolutely be earlier. I think it’s by an artist who identifies himself as Humbleboy in Ghana, in Africa (an educated guess). The barbershop sign is a style that is a thing from the 20th Century in West Africa. There are many other examples of it on the internet. Apparently he uses found “canvasses”. In this case, he found an old schoolroom chalkboard and did not even erase the multiplication tables, but used the reverse to paint on. It is this feature that really identifies it as Folk Art. But it’s just a board painted black, so I don’t know if that counts as a “real blackboard”. And, there is possibility that this artist may be a trained artist. And if he is/was, then he wouldn’t really qualify as a Naive or Outsider artist, because by definition a Outsider Art is by a completely untrained artist. I do think it just a fabulous piece. It comes from the collection of my late friend who collected decorative and tribal masks from various countries, vintage postcards and Naive Art. It measure 18″ x 23″. Please look at all the photos and read everything I’ve written about the condition and description of this item. It’ll come to you from a smoke-free, pet-free house. Thanks for the consideration.

Hopi Folk Art Mask by Gregory Lomayesva: hand-carved, hand-painted wood with feathers, hangs on a wall or sits on a flat surface. X 23 1/4 x 5 1/2. Gregory Lomayesva’s career began the old fashioned way with an idea and a pile of moxie. Dropping out of high school at the age of seventeen to pursue his art full-time, he landed his first job as a gallery assistant at one of Santa Fe’s prestigious showrooms. His cultural background now came into play. Of Hispanic ancestry on his mother’s side and Native American -Hopi- on his father’s side, Lomayesva began to reflect on his heritage and how it encircled him His introspection is evident in this fusion art. His woodworking pieces are bright and inventive and are a reflection of his own personal identification with and interpretation of his culture. The use of a particular image in a composition is a visual representation of a different feeling I’m having. It’s like emotional shorthand, says Gregory. He combines his love of historical western art themes and contemporary Indian art. Gregory has produced two albums of electronic pop music on his label Drip Records. He has also produced several short films. His invitation to exhibit in thirty countries, and repeat showings at the Smithsonian American Indian Museum and the Heard Museum make this artist worth watching. 2009 “Fusion” at Bryans Gallery, Taos, NM. 2009 National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian, Washington, D. 2009 Heard Museum, Phoenix, AZ. 2008 “Muse” at Gerbert Contemporary, Los Angeles, CA. 2008 “Bounce” at Ursa Gallery, Santa Fe, NM. 2006 “More Indian” at Winterrowd Fine Art, Santa Fe, NM. 2006 ” The Art of War” at Art & Industry, Santa Fe, NM. 2005 ” You Can Breathe Now” at J.
