This sparkling oil on Masonite from the 1960s-70s measures an important 27 ½ x 35 ½ framed; 24 x 32 actual and is singed lower right H. Obin Cap Haitien, as shown. Entitled Ces Heros Sur Le Lieu DUn Rende-Vous, the work depicts 7 men in colonial garb (along with horses) in front of a walled estate with elaborate iron gates. Based on the heros who were the founding fathers of Haiti, (most likely Henri Christophe, Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Alexandre Petion) Obin is also keen to include the fanciful colonial architecture for which cap Haitien is best known. The drawing is precise and the coloring is brilliant. Working both in Haiti and New York City, he created his often historically inspired fanciful depictions of his cultural heritage drawn from his highly personal imagination. This work, one of his largest and pre-dating his NYC residence, is in good stable condition with a fine scratch in the sky upper right and stable paint with minor dirt.
