American Folkart Ship Portrait, 1850’s, original maple frame, Gouache, sign E. W
It was painted circa 1850 and is done in watercolor and gouache. This came to us in what appears to be the original maple frame. The painting measures 18 1/2X27 inches. It is initialed in the lower left corner as E. The overall painting is in good shape, there are two areas of toning which certainly came from the original wooden backing boards. This came to us framed, we have not taken it apart. The maple has a flaw in the bottom right corner but for its age the colors are still rich, a highly detailed work. The overall frame measures 21 1/2X29 1/2 inches. We guarantee that this is a genuine period painting and not a repro or modern depiction. H that has been dealing in fine prints and paintings for over 25 years. We focus on works of American, European and Asian artists from the 18th century to the 1950’s.
