ANTIQUE circa 1850s PERIOD AMERICAN NEW ENGLAND FOLK ART PORTRAIT withPUFFY DRESS
ANTIQUE circa 1850s PERIOD AMERICAN NEW ENGLAND FOLK ART PORTRAIT w/PUFFY DRESS. This is an antique circa 1850s American folk art portrait from the New England area. It is an oil on board and measures approx. 28.75 x 24.25 inches. The frame is a period American Empire frame and measures approx. 34.5 x 30.5 inches. I believe the board it is painted on is pine or poplar wood. The painting is definitely in that Folk art style with a black puffy dress similar to such artists as Erastus Salisbury Field, Asahel Powers, Milton Hopkins, Ami Phillips, Sheldon Peck and many others from that period. The painting has definitely been cleaned and touched up at one time so it is not the original untouched finish. If you look very close along the top border on front there definitely might be a name and date of around 1850s which is barely visible and i think was affected when it was cleaned and touched up, i tried to make out the name but i could not, it is very difficult to picture. The frame is a fabulous Empire New England or New York frame that you see on the autehntic period portraits. All items must be paid within 10 days. There are a couple of companies i can recommened who both have websites with price-quote pages that are easy to fill out. Over that time period we have tried to offer a wide range of quality items. We sell everything from Paintings, Lamps, Clocks, Sculptures, Collectables and much much more. If i did not respond please try again because sometimes emails do get missed. Ralph Cahoon, Mermaid and Sailor, Primitive New England Folk Art
Approximately 11 x 9 inches. Provenance: From a large collection of Americana and folk art formed in the 1970s with the help of well-known New York folk art dealers. The painting is in original untouched condition. It has been well-stored. There is some very minor surface grime which does not affect the appearance. There is some wear near the frame-line, particularly in the lower right hand corner, as pictured. The frame is also in original untouched condition. The original nails appear to have never been removed or fiddled with in any way. There is substantial loss of gilding to the inner filet. Ralph Eugene Cahoon, Jr. Was born in 1910 in Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. A direct descendant of the first Dutch settlers, his family had emigrated in the 1660s from Scotland directly to Cape Cod. As a boy, Ralph often played close to the harbor, fishing, digging for clams or scallops. Sailing to the Grand Banks or Nantucket was a favorite pastime, as was sketching. His works often found their way into his high school’s newspaper. He completed a correspondence course in cartooning while in high school, and in 1929 was accepted into Boston’s School of Practical Art, concentrating on both fine and commercial art. He met and married Martha Farham in 1932. Born of Swedish immigrant parents in 1905, in Rosindale, Massachusetts, she had family that moved to Harwich on Cape Code when she was ten years old. She excelled in school, but chose an apprenticeship with her father, Axel Farham, who was a talented furniture decorator working for some of the best-known decorating firms in Boston. Under his guidance, she mastered a free-hand method of decorative painting called rosemaling, and later became proficient in stenciling and varnishing. After her marriage, she continued working with her father until she and Ralph bought a house in Osterville, Massachusetts. Their earlier works reflected traditional patterns of Pennsylvania Dutch and Swedish painted furniture, however they later began painting entire scenes on the fronts of secretaries and bureaus. In 1953, the Cahoon’s framed many works of a wealthy customer, Joan Whitney Payson. Later they made a transition from furniture to easel painting, and exhibited their work in Payson’s Long Island art gallery. It was a successful transition for the Cahoon’s, as were the years of productivity that followed. The material they first used was plywood, but later they favored masonite, whose surface better resembled that of the furniture they were used to decorating. Their individual styles were very similar, primarily pastel in tone, using greens, soft pinks, grays, and browns, with no attempt to use light or shade to create a third dimension. The’mermaid’ became Ralph Cahoon’s hallmark in the 1960s. His imagination and creativity using this motif knew no bounds, using mermaids to play golf, fish, knit, pose for photographs, or hide in trees. The New England coastline or lighthouses were favorite backdrops, as were hot air balloons. Martha’s themes included still lifes, nature studies, scenes including mythological figures, and pastoral scenes reflecting the different seasons. Ralph Cahoon died in 1982. From Askart, by Michael David Zellman, 3000 years of American Art. The item “Ralph Cahoon, Mermaid and Sailor, Primitive New England Folk Art” is in sale since Friday, February 02, 2018. Antique 19thC NEW ENGLAND PANTRY BOX CELERY-GREEN PAINT AAFA Folk Art Primitive. Hands down one of the best pantry boxes I’ve handled as far as surface and form go (and size to boot). It’s approx 8″W across the top (by) 5.75″H. Chunky, thick, swamped with patina. Long, slender fingers of opposing arrangement snug to the body with symetrically placed iron nails. Body with straight, nailed seam. Flared and chamfered handle, carved mushroom pegs. Top and bottom boards are nailed not pegged. The handle sat against the box for a very, very long time undisturbed, when lifted you can see more of a yellowish color under it possibly the original color (see last pic). Antique 19thC NEW ENGLAND PANTRY BOX CELERY-GREEN PAINT AAFA Folk Art Primitive
Antique 19thC NEW ENGLAND PANTRY BOX CELERY-GREEN PAINT AAFA Folk Art Primitive. Recently brought home from New Hampshire: One of the best pantry boxes I’ve handled as far as surface and form go (and size to boot). It’s approx 8″W across the top (by) 5.75″H. Early 19th century, no later than 1840. Original color was probably yellow or white which oxidized to a wonderful and unusual celery-heart-green. Chunky, thick, swamped with patina. Long, slender fingers of opposing arrangement snug to the body with symetrically placed iron nails. Body with straight, nailed seam. Flared and chamfered handle, carved mushroom pegs. Top and bottom boards are nailed not pegged. Shaker-quality craftsmanship with said characteristics, it may be Hingham-made but certainly New England origin (not signed). The handle in its down position resisted the elements which would redefine the surrounding surface over decades, when lifted you can see the yellow under it (see last pic). It must have sat undisturbed for a very long time. Thanks for your interest and please ask any questions you may have. Auctiva Offers Free Image Hosting and Editing. Auctiva gets you noticed! Outstanding folk art oil (possibly acrylic) on board painting of a busy New England farm, titled “Cider Farm, ” by important Cape Cod folk artist Rosebee b. The following biography is from the U. State Department’s Art in Embassies. My paintings reflect not only the life I lived and stories my grandfather told me, but America as it was long ago: when times were fairly straightforward and simple and there was a sense of magic all around us. The legacy of characters I knew and those my grandfather introduced to me fill my canvases with a sense of joy. Both real and imagined characters find their home in my work. I love my country, so my use of the American flag is not some politically correct statement for me – I’ve used them from the start. What I hope is that when people view my work they feel the same joy I feel that I do as I create each piece. People ask me how I can come up with so many different scenes and topics and I reply that I’ve kept my eyes and ears open for many years, now, (I was born in 1932) so there’s lots to paint! ” “Rosebee was raised in a New England town by her grandparents. Her grandfather was a whaler, and many of her paintings are inspired by her recollection of stories he told to her as a child – about sails, and whales and mermaid tails. Her grandmother was a quilter, and quilt patterns are very much in evidence in nearly all of Rosebee’s paintings. Rosebee came to painting late in life. Self-taught, she was prompted to begin painting because she wanted to create a visual record of all of her happy childhood memories. In the process, she has gained both widespread popularity and recognition. In 1987, for example, she was named the Most Promising Marine Painter in the Country by the Mystic Seaport Maritime Gallery. Her paintings are in the permanent collection of a number of prominent art museums, including The Peabody Museum, Salem Massachusetts; The Springfield Museum of Fine Art, Springfield, Massachusetts; The Barnum Museum, Bridgeport, Connecticut; The Heritage Plantation, Sandwich, Massachusetts; and the Custom House, Salem, Massachusetts. This painting is an outstanding example of Rosebee’s style. It is titled “Cider Farm” on a commemoration plaque and an original Rosebee poem, “The Cider Farm, ” is attached to the back of the frame. A label from The Captain Tobey House in Wareham is also attached. The painting is signed lower right, measures 16″ X 20″ (painting size), and is in good condition. Antique Portrait Of a Woman New England Folk Art Painting Att William Jennys
For sale is an antique Folk Art portrait painting of a woman. This painting is attributed to William Jennys. William Jennys was one of the many itinerant painters who traveled throughout New England in the 18 and 19 centuries, seeking commissions in smaller towns in rule areas. Two works attributed to him portrait of a man 1802 1805 and portrait of a woman 1802 to 1805 contain bear backgrounds, broadly molded faces, strongly suggesting this style of Jennys. The couples features are blunt, their hair is not a specially neat or done and both are dressed in clothing of good quality, but slightly out of fashion, suggesting that they live close to, but not in, and urban center at the turn of the 19th century. Jennys painted his portraits in ovals, that was another signature of his work. This portrait has a wax lining and has been re-lined many years ago. Measurements are: 30″ x 27 (framed) and 26″ x 19 1/2 unframed. Painting is in beautiful gold gilt antique frame. Any questions or comments, please feel free to ask, and good luck!
