Antique Early African American Portrait Prosperous Handsome Black Man Folk Art
This attractive and exceptional rarity in oil on canvas measures 34 1/8″ x 24 1/2″ framed; 30″ x 24″ actual and depicts a handsome and affluent young African American gentleman wearing a dark coat with large brass buttons, a colorful wastcoat and black cravat. Dating from the 1840’s-50’s, the naively painted portrait has great presence and presents a confident man with close-cropped hair and intense gaze. It was cleaned and relined in the 1980’s (the era of the frame) and you will note extensive in-painting in the background and to his suit lower right. There is apparent bitumen crazing in his hair and neckwear and there is NO apparent inpaint to the face/head. There is notable separation of the original canvas from the lining canvas, especially upper left and the paint layer is stable overall. The painting depicts a primitive/folk art style American painting of the Hudson River, West Point Bay Area. The painting has some stable, small, craquelure throughout which can be seen in photos along with a chip to the upper left corner. There is also a crack in the bottom right corner and some small specks of missing paint seen towards the top of the painting. The antique frame has some areas of loss seen around edges as well and upper right corner. Please refer to the photos to see the condition and any wear/chipping the frame has. The painting is unsigned on artist board. Measurements: The painting measures approx. 17.75 x 14 inches and 20.5 x 16.75 inches in frame. Early 19th century American folk art oil painting doctor possibly Ammi Phillips
Early American 19th century oil painting of a physician possibly by Ammi Phillips who was an itinerant painter in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. This was an estate find and is of a man who is pointing to a book that says Ippocrates on the spine which is the Italian spelling of Hippocrates, symbolizes a medical figure. Background is a pearly gray. Flesh tones are austere. Canvas has been restretched at an earlier date but is tight. Background of painting shows a number of repair patches, front shows some over painting in the location of the patches. The gold toned frame is 23 x 31 x 1 1/2 and appears to be period and original to the painting. The painting has been waxed. There are two small black dots and some crazing/craqueture but no peeling. Items are described to the best of my knowledge. I often do not know the history of the painting or how it was stored. Please note paintings and frames may have some natural evidence of aging such as small spots and small cracks. I describe all paintings to the best of my ability. How about that little fawn! Such a beautiful painting of the Redwood National Park! Listed artist: John Alfred Coultrup b. Medium: oil on board (Upson). Region: Redwood National Park. Dates: painting is not dated-exact age unknown. Probably 40’s or older. Signed: front lower left (foreground). Measures: 19″ x 26″ Framed: 21.5″ x 28.5″. Condition: There is a heavy scratch mark on the right side middle ground area. Tiny paint flecks, paint chips, very small dings to board, various other scuffs marks, scratches, all 4 sides of margins have frame abrasion with paint loss. Slight bowing to board! Painting could use better/more reinforcement to frame. Back ground on left side top has 2 possible larger areas of paint loss-this could be just the white paint behind trees but unsure. Painting needs mild restoration and or touch up. For as old as the painting is, it is in rather decent condition. Most areas of concern are mild but visible. Still worthy of hanging right away. Restoration is by choice. In overall good condition. Period frame condition: Multiple dings, small chips, paint loss, dust pockets, paint loss, cracks to corners, abrasions, scuffs and scratches. This delightfully naive glimpse of Early American life is painted in oil on paper glued down to a wooden (single board) panel with old mustard paint on the back. Housed in its original lemon gold frame (old surface with many touch-ups), it measures a most impressive 27″ x 32 1/2″ framed; 22″ x 27″ actual and is rich with meticulously drawn and painted details. Reminiscent of the works of Joseph H. In the Bigelow Blue Stone Works located nearby. The painting shows considerable age-toning and staining with areas of slightly raised/wrinkled paper showing lines of loss and paper losses in both lower corners and right edge. The surface is stable and the colors come across nicely despite some loss of contrast with the background. The fragile label is under protective plexiglas.
