Up for sale is this phenomenal example of early hand painted figural folk art in the form of a dramatic multicolor butterfly. This piece is composed of multiple types of hand paint woods fashioned in the form of a corner shelf with a delicately hewn center tapering at each end, scalloped carved edges on the wings of the butterfly, and hand carved zig zag pattern wood on the edge of the shelf. The wood is then hand painted with a variety of colors including orange, red, white, yellow, burgundy, and green which create a beautiful composition that at times references naturalism in the form of flowers and vines and at times enters the realms of abstraction as can be seen in the swirling lines of the lower wings resembling paintings by Morris Lewis, and the chevrons of the center body which mimic the chevron patterns of the shelf edge. This is a truly incredible piece of early folk art, all hand made and hand painted, measuring just shy of 23 in total height and with a shelf that extends out approximately 5. This piece is in lovely condition with a surface that shows its age and history without being overtly or unflatteringly worn or damaged. There is some minor paint splatter on the shelf, which could be cleaned professionally if you so choose and there is a small chip pictured along one of the scallops of the upper wing.
