Her lyrical sculptures are similar to papier-mâché, but made without wire, and consist exclusively of newspaper and glue. Born Mary Onley and later renamed Mama-Girl by her grandmother, she came from generations of farm laborers and started working in the fields herself at the age of twelve. “I’ve picked tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, greens, peppers, ” Mama-Girl remembers. You name it, and I’ve done it all. Mama-Girl had to stop working outdoors because of severe allergies, which resulted in numerous hospitalizations. Episode, Mama-Girl reports being visited by a spirit, who instructed her to create art out of paper and other found objects-something she had never attempted before. A little more than twenty years later, Mama-Girl is one of the most celebrated folk artists on the East Coast. Her work has shown at craft shows across the Mid-Atlantic, and is a favorite of many folk art collectors, but she still credits every piece to the spirit who visits her in her studio each day: If the Spirit don’t give it to me, I can’t do it.

Antique Early African American Portrait Prosperous Handsome Black Man Folk Art

This attractive and exceptional rarity in oil on canvas measures 34 1/8″ x 24 1/2″ framed; 30″ x 24″ actual and depicts a handsome and affluent young African American gentleman wearing a dark coat with large brass buttons, a colorful wastcoat and black cravat. Dating from the 1840’s-50’s, the naively painted portrait has great presence and presents a confident man with close-cropped hair and intense gaze. It was cleaned and relined in the 1980’s (the era of the frame) and you will note extensive in-painting in the background and to his suit lower right. There is apparent bitumen crazing in his hair and neckwear and there is NO apparent inpaint to the face/head. There is notable separation of the original canvas from the lining canvas, especially upper left and the paint layer is stable overall.
