With the arrival of video and video cassettes during 1980s In Ghana (West Africa) a small-scale film distribution / mobile Cinema was created. This small size mobile “Cinema” operators were equipped with a television a Video and sometimes with a small portable generator and were moving from town to town from village to village operating and showing their films! (During the day inside social clubs or houses and during the night in the open air). In order to attract more customers and in order to advertise their mission and business the need of huge posters was created and born. Talented artists after viewing the film were creating large size posters using oil paint on canvas (Because of unavailability and high cost of imported canvas , The artists were using used flour sacks sewn together). The artist had the freedom to add or change scenes seen or not seen in the film in order to make the poster more attractive (This is the reason that this hand painted posters are more interesting as ART than the normal posters since each of this hand painted poster is UNIQUE and except the film content it also express the artist himself). By the mid 1990s the mobile Cinema business declined and almost collapsed since television and video was more widely available in Ghana. The profits of the mobile Cinema operators were also reduced and they were not able to afford the “expensive” talented artists to paint their posters anymore. At the present days they have to rely with Photocopy paper posters in order to survive and reduce cost. African American Folk Art ORIGINAL Painting by Leon Collins-The Nag, 2017
A rare original painting by Leon Collins! The Nag acrylic on stretched canvas is a 2017 painting by Navasota, Texasfolk artist Leon Collins. It is 14½ by 21½ by 1, unframed. Childhoodmemories are frequent subjects in Collins work, memories that includechildhood friends in The Smokehouse Gang, his grandmother Big Mamma, and herseven sisters, as well as quarrelsome relatives and neighbors. Other paintings with this themeinclude Charlie Black, Not This Time (2009, see picture 6). An African American, Leon Collins (1951-; seepicture 5) is Navasotas local legend. While he has housed his Color of LifeGallery in several antique stores along East Washington Street, he is known forpainting and displaying his treasures on the sidewalk in full view of passersby. According to fellow Navasota artist andsculptor Russell Cushman, Collins is the most successful artist in the BrazosValley, and perhaps the most prolific artist that Texas has produced. LeonCollins is best known for portraying his many childhood memories, but his workincludes a number of distinct phases and styles. Collins is an amazinglyproductive artist, painting one or more works a day. He sells them as fast as he can paint them, so original works of his are rare and hard to find. His life and works havebeen featured in Images of America:Navasota by Robin and Joy Montgomery (2012), Texas Farm and Home Magazine(September, 2018), South Texas Live Magazine (February, 2009), the NavasotaCurrentRussell Cushmans blog, The Lufkin News, and the Navasota Examiner(December 3, 2008). His paintings have been shown in galleries from Bryan, FortWorth, and Dallas, Texas to New York, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Localshowings have included the Redbud Gallery of Houston, the Main Street FortWorth Arts Festival, and Rice University. RARE Iconic Mary Whitfield African American Negro Folk Art Painting South Cotton
Whitfield an American Classic. A very rare African American Folk Art-Outsider Art Masterpiece by the elusive painter in her signature iconic style medium, acrylic/watercolor on canvas board. Appropriately titled,’Day is Done’, the painting is accompanied with a fascinating narrative describing the painting subject and hand written and signed by the artist herself. Although’Day is Done’ has been highly sought after for decades by museums and collectors, the painting is being offered here for sale for the very first time. Mary Whitfield has signed’Day Is Done’ twice, on the front of the painting with her distinctive, MW, and with her full signature found on the reverse of the canvas. Dimensions 16″ x 20″. Mary Whitfield was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1947 when her mother was nineteen. Her father walked out on their wedding day so Mary spent the first years of her life in the home of her maternal grandparents. It was a loving environment with two aunts who each had eight children. The home was filled with family stories and traditions. Marys grandmother was an active soldier in the Civil Rights struggle. As a child, Mary developed a vivid imagination and loved to spend hours entertaining her younger sister and cousins, by telling stories that she illustrated with drawings. When Mary was seven, her mother remarried a man from New York and moved there with her sister. She and her sister would spend every summer in Alabama. In Great Neck, Mary and her sister were pioneers in integration, being the only black members of the student body. During the early years of her marriage, Mary began having the compulsion to create things after her children were put to bed. She would often find old plywood and housepaint in her garage and would paint paintings. This compulsion became a continuation of her love for storytelling that filled her lonely nights. Bringing to visual life a variety of stories became her escape from the sadness in her marriage. Over time, she found that creating art was a way of coping with her depression. Whitfield focuses her rich paintings on the historical and modern plight of African-Americans. The powerful works contain little detail; the figures have no facial features. Instead, the drama of their gestures or body language conveys the feeling of the painting. The American Museum of Folk Art wrote that through her spiritually powerful images and writings Mary Frances Whitfield re-interprets and documents stories told to her as a child. Her deceptively simple yet touching portrayals of the disquieting and heroic history of African Americans convey injustice, suffering, love and optimism. Day Is Done’ is a masterpiece, a virtual tour de force. The paintings of Mary F. Whitfield are found in the renown museums and in private collections.
