Folk Art Haitian Louisianne Saint Fleurant, Often called the “Godmother of Saint Soleil School of Painting”; Louisiane was born in Petit trou de Nippes in 1922. One of the five founders of “Saint Soleil”, she is also the mother of famous painters Ramphis and Stivenson Magloire. Her influence on the progress of Haitian art has been enormous. She lived in Petion Ville. There is a great demand for Louisiane’s paintings. Her work has been exhibited in many parts of the world. Saint Soleil was founded in the early 1970’s under the direction of Tiga (Jean Claude Garoute) and Maud Robart, promoters of this movement in Soisson-la-Montagne (approximately 50km from Port-au-Prince). Saint Soleil gained international recognition when Andre Malreaux visited the community in 1975. Andre Malreaux immortalized the movement by feathuring Saint Soleil in his book “L’Intemporel”. The Saint Soleil painters are heavily influenced by the voodoo religion. They paint as they are monted or possessed by the voodoo loas or spirits. Saint Soleil disbanded after only a few years, but five of the artists, Prosper Pierre Louis, Levoy Exil, Denis Smith, Dieuseul Paul and Louisianne Saint Fleurant reorganized into a group “Cinq Soleils”. This is a one of a kind original painting. Johnnie, an African American artist is incarcerated, has been painting about three years and is self taught. He has donated many of his paintings to support a program that allows men to earn their college degrees while behind bars. He has a rare eye disorder and is diagnosed as legally blind but still manages to create beautiful works of art. This is titled “Eve” and is hand painted in oil and oil pastels on canvas paper. It is unframed and signed. The photos where it is shown in a frame are just to help you visualize what the painting would look like in a frame. There is a crease in the paper in the back of the painting which does not seem to affect the front of the painting(please see photo). Color may vary slightly due to lighting.
