Very interesting folk art painting with view from the Skowhegan Falls before the dams. The scene shows figures cutting wood and people in boats picking up logs from the water. Log driving was popular in Skowhegan from the early 19th century until it ended in 1976. The first settlers cut the trees on their farms to build log cabins and barns. When they started to run out of trees in this area, so they had to cut the trees up the river and float them down river to Skowhegan. They built sawmills on the Skowhegan island in order to saw lumber to build the houses in Skowhegan village. Later they built pulp and paper mills up and down the Kennebec river, and began to cut pulpwood for making paper. The painting originates from a Norwegian family whose relations worked in Maine. A very rare oil and a collectors dream. Condition: Ready to hang. The oil could use a light cleaning, due to the old age. Otherwise fine with no holes, tears or missing paint.
